I have an 08/08 system board in a T61 that has died, no lights or power and the 7A main fuse was taken out. I suspect a DC in power MOSFET failure but repairer reckons more to it.
My first thoughts are to part it out on ebay to help towards an SSD for my T420 but having two laptops is a boon as I live in two places and avoid carrying the lappy for various reasons.
I fitted a T9300 and 8GB of memory, I have most of the accessories, docking, various batteries and ultrabay drives so I would prefer to keep it. It is still a capable machine for me.
So my question is, which system board with the Intel graphics will fit and be closest for peripherals/sockets/readers etc?
This is the parts lookup from the poorly machine:

It has Firewire, 3xUSB, PCMCIA slot (i am happy to lose that if needs be), SD card reader and LAN/MODEM.
I do not use intensive graphics so am happy to move to the clunky Intel graphics as I know I would be betting against the odds to buy an Nvidia board.
My time to swap boards is free so its just the cost of a board to me. Tell me what you think please.

You are probably better off parting it out and getting another T420.

Given that you're utilizing a Penryn CPU, a native Penryn board would be your best bet, and that is 42W7875.

That's not going to be an easy find, so you can get a Merom board 42W7651 and apply Middleton's BIOS to eliminate the warning.

I'm sure that there are other FRUs applicable, but these two are the ones listed in the HMM.

    Good luck.

The Lenovo site is like a labyrinth to me, those two FRU, are they Intel X3100 GPU? Is there somewhere I can bone up on what the FRU for planars refers to?
    Thanks so far.

I used the very very handy Middleton BIOS on the subject machine as I fitted a Crucial M4. A godsend of a job he did for us T series owners.

Ah! A search on ebay with the words "intel graphics" or "nvidia graphics" shows that the planar 42W7875 has a very different looking GPU to the one installed on my machine and on other images that I saw for "t61 motherboard nvidia graphics".
    I may be in luck.

Just lost a wordy reply I was typing as my desktop ATX supply is about to go out in sympathy with the dead T61! I looked up images of "t61 mobo nvidia" and "t61 intel mobo GPU". I am in luck it seems. 42W7875 is Intel GPU and going for cheap, allegedly in working order!
