Hello folks, I just received my T61 a week ago..

I'm experiencing a bizarre problem with my T61.
I am using Vista Home Premium and it's fully updated...

I find that when i hibernate the computer, if I unplug the AC Adapter, the battery will discharge by itself.. for instance, if I wait a good 8 hours or so, the battery is depleted to 80% when i turn it back on.

I am in fact hibernating, and not putting it into 'SLEEP' mode.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    Thanks!

Same thing with me. I've just resorted to shutting down if I won't be using the computer for a while.

In your power management settings, look for devices that can wake your machine up in hibernate. Disable their ability to wake the machine up.

You should find some options in your Device Manager. Check out the USB Power Managements in particular.

on hibernation why don't you just leave it pluged in?

Because that would defeat the purpose of resuming work quickly when mobile. Say immediately after lunch.

Do you mean: a fast launch just after a quick lunch?

    PS
Power consumption of my T61p - in 'stand by' mode - is surprisingly high.
I still use HP nx8220 (Pentium M 1.6GHz) which can be left in this mode for few days until battery discharges.

I meant a lunch to provide an example of why I wouldn't be able to have my Thinkpad plugged in for periods of half an hour to an hour, but still be able to resume work fairly quickly. I would just rather not have my computer using power in hibernation.

I went into Device Manager and right clicked "USB controllers" and chose properties, but there were no power management settings as indicated in Device Manger help. Is this an issue worth contacting Lenovo about?

The Power Management settings tab are in the ones labeled "USB Root Hub".

Okay..so i opened device manager and set a whole bunch of devices to 'not allow the device to wake the computer'

I also went into the BIOS and disabled wake-on-lan and a few other settings..

    battery is still discharging..

glad to see someone else has my problem as well..wondering if this problem is only amongst t61's?

Welcome to my world. I've been fighting this on my T61p for 3 months and have yet to figure it out. I knew from the beginning I'd have to turn off all the stuff to keep the battery from draining, but there's obviously something I'm missing. I don't have this problem on my old Compaq Presario. I can leave it hibernated for 3 weeks with no battery loss. With my T61p, I'm lucky to get a few days.

jmbailey, yeah..this is pretty ridiculous, I called tech support, and they are sending me a replacement battery..but I'm sure that isn't the problem.

masteraleph, I am running Vista Home Premium..

    marcster,

try hibernating your machine, taking out the battery, turning it on/off a few times to run out the phantom juice then put the battery back in.

I have the same problem but its intermittent and if I do the steps above, it never drains on hibernation

thing is i remember it working fine before the last bios update.

How do i know if i have the latest bios update?

If i use the thinkvantage system update, would it automatically update the BIOS for me assuming a new one was released?

    Thanks! :)

The usual rule of thumb about BIOS updates is that if there is no major improvements/additions to the BIOS, then don't update the BIOS. The BIOS update is probably the most important components to update but also the most dangerous as it can brick your laptop. I recommend that you don't update your BIOS unless it's really necessary. Other than that, don't mess with what works. ;)

Well in the case that the revision includes an update so that my t61 will no longer discharge under hibernation, i gotta install it :p

I believe im running the latest one though..

On top of disabling all devices from allowing the computer to wake up you have to do a few other things. Make sure the computer is allowed to put those devices to sleep and also check this:

In your control panel go to network devices -> go to your network card, something like Intel 82566MM Gigabit.

First, double check that the option to wake the computer is unchecked and the option to allow the device to go to turn off is checked. On top of that however in the advanced tab you have to scroll to the bottom where you have the options "wake on..." Make sure you set those all to disabled. Even if you have the option unchecked to not allow the network card to wake the machine if you have the wake on setting enabled there the network controller will stay powered up to some level giving you a drain on your battery.

Try that and post back your results.

Does this need to be repeated for all devices or just the network card in particular?

I think the network card is the only one that you have to do that with.

Thanks. Looks like your solution worked. I put my t61p in hibernation for 8 hours w/o loss of charge.
