i have a t61 that ive had since august. just last week, ive been hearing the buzzing noise coming from the CPU fan in the top left of the laptop. i opened up the laptop cleaned it and i still hear the buzzing noise. anything else i can do to stop this??
-
anyone? i guess this issue isnt common?
-
Does it only do it on battery power? If so, search for "Intel Core whine"; that's your problem.

Noise is the Core 2 duo whine. Typically more prevalent on battery. I hear it when the room is quiet. Sometimes I can hear it when plugged in. On my T61, it's not constant and doesn't annoy me too much because I know what it is. There are other threads about it in this forum:

That is so weird - I got my T61 in August too and 2 days ago I started getting that noise from the fan.
It is definitely not the core duo whine. It sounds like the fan is just hitting something or is just not screwed tightly.
when the fan does not work, the T61 is very quiet, but as soon as it starts spinning I get the noise.
Did you find out how to solve the problem? -
I have this exact problem, just got my system back from easyserv repair and it is still a problem. Sending it back again, will keep you updated.
-
i would send it back so they can tighten the screws and clean it out. it sounds like it sucked up some particle and it just stuck in there clanking around
-
Thanks but I need my laptop close by in the next couple of weeks so I'd rather hear the noise than not have it.
I'll wait hear what was the problem with other people.
I find it still weird that it started at the same time with a couple of us (especially since we bought it in August). -
Hmm that's weird indeed if more people are having this. I bought my t61 in August as well and recently started to hear this strange cpu fan noise. It definitely isn't cpu whine as someone suggested, I have it too, know how it sounds. The fan noise is rather as if something was wrong with the motor of the fan. The faster it rotates the faster it "ticks" (to a moment when you can distinguish the ticks). When it slows down just before switching off you can easily hear every "tick".
I disassembled the top cover, cleaned the fan with canned air and checked if there isn't anything odd there but couldn't find anything.
I also wouldn't like to send it for repair as i need it and so far it works, apart from that annoying noise. If anyone has any suggestions what to check (any screws perhaps?) I'd be glad to hear. -
I got my T61 in july, started to hear the ticking in december. Glad to know it isn't just me....
There doesn't seem to be a solution I guess? Any suggestions? -
....or am i going to need to send this in?
-
As I said, I got it as well just 2 weeks ago.
I cleaned the fan completley and screwed everything tightly but it continues.
I guess it depends on how much it bothers you - for me it is much more trouble sending it for repair than hearing this noise. Notice that the fan only starts to work and hence the noise starts only once in a while when the computer gets hot, otherwise you can't hear anything.
Since this seems to happen to a lot of people at the same time (4-5 months after people bought the laptop) this is a definite issue but I don't think it is serious apart from the noise.
I would be glad to hear though if someone got this fixed and what Lenovo had to say about this. -
I had this problem as well and I sent the computer in for repair twice and they eventually replaced the fan and now every think is working correctly, hope this helps.
-
I am going to send it in. I'll have them reformat my hard drive too to fix the many problems in my registry bc of Windows Vista.
-
Got the fan problem resolved. They put in a brand new fan. Apparently this is a new type of fan that they have been using, so if you have T61 purchased last june/july we are the first to use them...which is why we were the ones to realize the flaw in it. I'll probably need another new non-buzzing fan in 6-8mos., but I'm crossing my fingers.

i have T42P and i hear the same noise too, its not the core 2 duo i believe
btw how did you open it and clean it? is it safe todo it @home ? -

Thanks man, appreciate the follow up.
I still have the noise- but I will go get it replaced too.
Btw, did you tell them to replace the fan or were they already aware of that problem and did it on their own? -
I am reporting the same problem with my T61 bought in June.
There is a problem with the fan... Is it possible to get it replaced under warranty at a Lenovo support partner, without having to give away your laptop for days or weeks?
