Hi, I have an IBM T61 14'' laptop. It has the following part number

SBB PC CARD SLOT SMART CSLOT

From what I have read in other threads it means is that there is no express card slot in this laptop. However I was under the impression that it comes with a Card Reader which I cannot find. I would like to read the various types of SD cards (SD, Mini, Micro). Can someone please confirm if the reader needs to be purchased separately and where would that go in the T61. Would the reader take up both slots and what is the use of the Smart Card slot? Thanks

The smart card is used for authentication in some corporate environments (it is a token used either in conjuction with or instead of a password).

I believe the T61 is available either with PC card slot/Express Card slot, or a PC card slot/Smart card reader, or a PC card slot/SD card reader. Your machine is the second option and doesn't include a media card reader.

You may be able to remove the smart card reader and replace it with a media card reader (I doubt it). Your best bet is probably to buy a media card reader. You can either get one that will permanently reside in your PCMCIA slot (has the advantage of being flush), or you can buy a USB card reader like this one. I hope this helps.

I use a PCMCIA card reader on my R60. It's kind of lame they didn't offer a card reader, but it works.

you can also purchase a USB based multi-reader-- they are inexpensive, very compact, need no external power, and usually plug-n-play

I've had USB card readers. They work fine, but easy to forget. While PC Card will sit flush and you can just leave it in there.
