I have owned this T61 for nearly 10 months now. For the last two or three months, it started randomly crashing sometimes. When I am watching streaming movies online, it'll just crash and won't start up until it cools down in few minutes.

Fan hardly stops making constant low-intensity ticking/whooshing sound even when the CPU is idle and Hard Disk Usage is nil. Since last week, the sound has become unbearably loud and I can not even dare using it in library.

Then, I found the CPU temperature is very high, over 68C even when it is idle. I remembered the CPU temperature during idling to be below 46C before.

I have read somewhere that Heat Sink in T61 needs to be replaced after about a year or so, and it is the same problem with every T61. Do you also think the freezing problem is related to the overheating, which again is related to Heat Sink?

My T61 has a one year limited warranty and is entitled to IBM EZServ service. Do you recommend calling Lenovo support service and get them to replace the Heat Sink? Will it be covered in my warranty? If not, how much expenditure are we talking about here?

To be honest I don't want to just start looking reselling my T61, and I will be really happy with my T61 if somehow this fan sound and overheating problems can be fixed.

    Please share you experiences.

I would at least call Lenovo support and ask them if they have any idea of what could be the problem. It could be the fan which doesn't run well due to dust etc.

Do you think my warranty will cover the Heat Sink / Fan Assembly replacement costs?

Off course if that's the culprit, but "you've heard it" doesn't necessarily mean that's what's happening to your box. Lenovo will diagnose the problem and fix it accordingly. Is your temp constantly high in Vista? or in your the other dual boot OS? Temp control is an OS function and it could even be a software fault.

They're saying that the usual service turnaround time is 5-12 business days. Considering the delays at the time of its shipment last year, I am not sure how much "realistic" time estimate I should take if I send it tomorrow.

How much delays you have faced?
