I currently have a T7300 and 2GB RAM. Since the T9300 is the same Intel Socket P, can I simply replace the CPU (with appropriate static precautions and heatsink compound) with the Intel T9300 CPU without BIOS changes or other problems?
-
you can replace it,but do you really need it??
-
i would rather spend the money on memory (or SSD in the near future).
-
I don't think you'll notice much difference other than a little longer battery life, slightly cooler operation, and marginally better performance. Unless you're getting the T9300 for ubercheap, why bother?
-
If I were you, I would hold off until the new platforms arrive. That why, you will be able to get a a T9300 cheaper. Also, keep in mind that a CPU change is likely to void your warranty. You may need a BIOS flash, but they should be easy to get as Thinkpads support the new architecture.

I agree with Charr. You can do the upgrade but if you can hold out until June Nehalem release and the subsequent price cuts that would be all the better.

Nehalem is coming out in June?
On the topic, is there a guide as to how to take apart a T61p? -
Make sure you have the latest BIOS before you begin.
Good luck. -
Yup.
Here are a couple links with videos to take your laptop apart. (first link is better IMO)

A T9300 would run ~$325, right? I think the upgrade would likely be a large waste of money. What are you using your computer for that you need the extra speed?
How much RAM do you have? RAM generally provides more bang for the buck than a CPU upgrade.
If it's more about having the latest and greatest than an absolute need, then you might as well wait until June, when the Montevina platform is coming out.
Nehalem is NOT coming out in June. The Nehalem architecture will not be in laptops until 2009 Q2 with the Calpella platform.
