I did a clean install of vista now when I try to play a movie it says no DVD Decoder. How and where do I get that?

You can use VideoLAN which is free and works quite well. If you saved the SWTools folder it should contain WinDVD which will also play DVDs.

Which version of Vista are you running? I believe that at least Home Premium and up (excluding Business?) have a DVD decoder included with Windows Media Player 11. If not, then yeah VLC will work fine.

Alternatively, you could also download and install the Combined Community Codec Pack HERE which should have a compatible decoder included, although it's a been a little while since I've checked, so I could be wrong about that. It's a great codec pack to have around regardless though for those random video files you find that you can't seem to figure out what codec it needs to play.

Actually, a really awesome decoder that has them all combined (including playing Quicktime in Media Player) is located here:

There are always updates for the latest, plus it is 32 and 64 bit friendly - and did I mention, FREE!!!!!!!

What the above poster is referring to is called the "Vista Codec Package". Despite its name, it also works well on windows xp. I'm running it right now and I have to say it beats klite mega codec pack and is not nearly as bloated. It has all common codecs and some uncommon ones. I haven't run into a codec problem yet. Unlike Klite mega, however, it does not come with a real media decoder only an H.264 decoder. So you'll need real alternative if have to put up with that real media junk.
