Although I am not taking my T61 as an entertainment laptop, I found that the quality of playing a dvd movie with this laptop is really poor. Is this for sure or just I didn't have the right setting ? Anyone can share their experience?

BTW, what's the difference between a LG and a Samsung screen on a T61? Mine comes with a LG screen

Can you be more specific? Are the viewing angles very poor, are the colors washed out, are there a lot of backlight bleeding? etc., etc.

It's not the viewing angle issue. I was watching with the best possible angle. Just found the image contrast was low (the blacks weren't black but greys, the colors were pale) and the image wasn't sharp enough, when compared to watching the same dvd with my other sony N250 laptop.

LoeGlass, if you truly wanted to watch DVD's with ultra clarity, you should have bought a Sharp laptop with their Aquos LCD tech. Sharp definitely makes the brighest, best looking LCD's on the market. In fact they set the bar. Any Lenovo is a compromise business machine. Besides, DVD's won't look good on laptops anyway, the resolutions are all wrong. Best to watch your DVD's and HD DVD's/Blu-ray on something like a Sharp Aquos 46"LCD HDTV 1080p.

I agree, movies were great on my sony x-brite displays. OTOH I wouldn't want to watch ANYTHING on the wxga+ t 61 they sent me.

Are there any thinkpad comes with LCD with true bright features like in Acer or HP, or Toshiba at least? I'm looking to buy one with 13" or 14"

    Thank you,

Well, they used to have a 300nits "maxbright" for the z series.

But don't hesitate based on evaluations from the few of us who are complaining about the 14.1" wxga+ display. Especially if brightness is all you're worried about (besides, 200 nits is still much brighter than most older thinkpads' 4:3 14.1's). Anyways, most users here find acceptable what I don't (limited horizontal and no good vertical viewing angle, massive light leakage, unacceptable; contrast & colors ok)... or at least are convinced that all displays are equally as poor.

But it's bright, if that's your concern. In fact I traded it in on one that is not even as bright as the t 61 was, just better in all other qualities (IMOO- SPDBAD, BAA YMMV).

I have the latest nVidia driver updated but I'm not sure if the settings are correct. I have adjusted the color settings in nVidia Control Panel until I am fairly satisfied with the background pic and other photo images. I said "fairly satisfied" because I've tried but still couldn't adjust it to the quality of my desktop w/Dell 2407 monitor.

I raised the question just to confirm if my observation is true or because I haven't done enough adjustments for my new laptop. Its my first laptop ever since and before I bought the T61 I have read a lot of comments hoping to get one of the top-of-the-line laptops in the market- at least better than my son's Sony N250 laptop I mentioned earlier. I didn't expect to see a dvd quality that was not up to the level delivered by the Sony N series.

I agree that the best way to watch dvd movie is using a proper LCD TV designed for the purpose, but I hope the gap won't be that large when I am bringing with me one of the best laptops on my way travelling and want some entertainment !!!!

The T61 is a great system, but if watching DVDs is one of your priorities I daresay you bought the wrong system. Thinkpads have a reputation for bland screens, with one exception being the now defunct 'flexview' screens.

hey look man the T series is a business laptop and you would be stupid if you would use this as a entertainment laptop. this is a work laptop. it is like telling a Computer Engineer to make a circuit board. i am not say that they cant do it but it would just be hard to do it. but or a electrical engineer it would just be perfect.

Thank you guys for the info and comments. I bought the T61 mostly for my business travels so I won't be too upset about its quality on playing dvds. Only that it was below my expectation (wrong expectation, may be!) and I need experience Thinkpad owners to confirm that I didn't miss out anything re the settings ! Thank you ALL : )
