The Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T61 shows that the display is 220 nits.

I recently read a post on another forum from someone who's had a T61 for 4 days and said that the LCD is the best of any ThinkPad yet. Good news. :)

I don't extrapolate. Just passing the info along.

It's my understanding that other ThinkPad screens are also 220 nits, so not sure why the poster said what he did. I was just happy to be getting 20 more nits.

What the heck is a nit anyway?

There is a recent thread about how the new Dell D630 screen is supposedly brighter than the T61 screen. If memory serves, the D630 screen is rated at 220 nit, which now we know has exactly the same rating as the T61 screen. Even though no one has actually seen a Dell D630 or read any online reviews of the D630, a lot of people seem want to cancel their T61 orders and place D630 orders all based solely on rumors/innuendos.

    Go figure.

I was going to ask about the displays myself. I think I read somewhere that the WXGA+ (1440x900) in addition to the higher resolution, is also brighter than the WXGA (1280x768)? Is that true?

If so, I will see if I can change my original order (placed on 5/26) to one of the QUOTEs with the WXGA+ screen for $22.50 more. Originally I thought the display was not that important since I was mainly going to use the T61 as a desktop at home (with a KVM switch to share keyboard and monitor) and was getting a laptop only for the few times we do travel.

How does it compare to the display of a Dell Lattitude D600? (work laptop ...
on 3 year refresh cycle, due for new one next year ... people due this year are getting T60s. My previous was T23, then T40, then Dell D600)

To add insult to injury I know the WXGA+ (1440x900) screen on the D620 has had 220 nits since January. The WXGA (1280x800) screen was less than 200 nits. In other words, the D630 might have the same crappy screen as the D620.................Wait a minute, I plan to buy a D630. Oh well, I will find out if it is the same half ass screen.

No, buddy. It is the WXGA+ screen. It says in the review. Conflicting reports eh?

i didn't like that display when I tested it side-by-side the 15" standard aspect IPS screen (read T60 the reviews here too for pics)

i think that one was 185 or 200 nits per the tabook OTTOMH

The Tabook lists 200nits for the WXGA+, but this is because Lenovo is sourcing from multiple manufacturers and they're probably just listing the lowest. For example, Samsung's WXGA+ screen is only rated at 200 nits ( link), whereas the LG-Philips is 220 nits ( link).

Actually, I wonder if someone sue-happy would go after Dell. They advertised their WXGA+ screen as 220nits, but I just replaced the very Samsung panel I linked above with the LG-Philips screen on my D620 this past Friday.

As for this T61 vs D630 screen brightness thing, it's just going to be luck of the draw on both sides because I'm certain Lenovo and Dell both source from the same panel manufacturers and these panels from different manufacturers won't be made equal even if the spec sheets say they are.

Interesting. So the Tabook looks like it lists the lowest and the Hardware Manual (link from my original post) lists the highest.

Sure hope I get the LG screen.

Yeah. Just checked Andrew's review and found he was using a WXGA+ LG screen. It is supposed to be a 220 nits one... but it is still not bright.

Well I spoke to a really helpful representative at Lenovo. He looked up the exact specs and said that the T61 widescreens were 185 nits for XGA and 200 for XGA+. Incidentally he said the T42 I've been currently using is 150 nits. He looked up serial numbers to get this info.
