I'm going to buy a 24" monitor as a extended monitor for my T61 with Intel graphics. I am using Windows 7 (64-bit).

    1) Can i use 1920 x 1200 resolution on the external monitor since my T61's 14.1" screen uses 1400 x 1050 (4:3).

    2) Can i use my external monitor as the primary monitor?

    3) Is there anything else I need to know or should be aware of?

    Cheers!

Yes, yes, and no. It should really "just work".

I think the T61 only has a VGA output. How do I sort out the connection issue with all those new connection formats: D-sub, DVI, DisplayPort, and HDMI.

Do I need a converter? Which one would you recommend?

VGA and D-sub are the same, so you just need a VGA/D-sub cable if the monitor doesn't already come with one.

The simplest thing to use is the Lenovo dock. Then you can use VGA or DVI.

I just tried hooking an external monitor to my T61 a couple of days ago. I'm using Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Both my T61 and the external monitor have 1440x900 resolution, but the first time I powered up with the external screen attached both screens came up in 1024x768 (or something like that). Its not a huge problem, you simply have to reset the resolution for each screen then everything should be OK. On subsequent power-ups both screens come up in the correct resolution.

The only problem now is that with the two screens side by side, I can see how yellowish & dim my T61's screen is. :(

I think if you're about to be using different resolutions on the external monitor compared to your laptop display, with Intel graphics, then you can use only one of the displays at a time. It would not have been a problem if you had nVidia GPU.

Should be able to use both at same time just fine. Did it with my t61 and 1080p monitor.
