Got the Fan error message on a 4 year old T61. Replaced it with a fan from ebay and still have the same problem.

I'm guessing the motherboard fan controller is shot, is this a fair assumption?

If so can I still run the laptop with no fan (and let it throttle itself?)

    Thanks!

Does the fan turn on at all?

I would download TPfancontrol to see if you can get it to work.

If it wasn't for my Nvidia GPU, my T61 wouldn't need to use the fan as the CPU stays ice cold.

No the fan doesn't come on at all....

It's a 5v fan, I'm searching around the motherboard for a large solderable 5v power source....so far nothing...
