    Hello,

I have a T61 14.1" widescreen notebook that I got last year. Recently (last two months) the main fan for the computer underneath the left speaker starting making a really loud noise, almost like the blades are hitting something on every rotation. I have looked on the forums here, and this seems to be a common problem, with most people just sending the computer back for repairs. The trouble is that mine is out of warranty, and being a student, I just don't have the money to get it fixed.

I was wondering if anyone has actually managed to fix the fan themselves. I have blown compressed air into the vents, but this didn't seem to do anything. Further, I took the keyboard off and inspected the fan, which seems to be fine as far as I can tell. If anyone has managed to fix the fan themselves, I would love to hear about it.

    Thanks for the help!

It would do you well to consider alternatives. A good insurance policy is like "if we have to we'll replace any part of your pc." I always personally take it out to the max. I've never fixed the fan myself becuse I've never had any troubles with my t61. Unfortunately, you'll have to pay for a fan replacement.

Possibly the fan is whirring on some cables along the fan assembly. You could download the HMM to have a look on your laptop inside. It sure does not void anything and if a simply cable is in the way on the fan just reroute it.

Other options are removing the bearing on the fan and lubricate them, but that's just not for anyone.

In my case, I rather do this by myself, than to pay someone.
