I have a T61 that's about a year old now. A few weeks ago the fan became audible (it was silent before)... it's not active more than it was before, it's more raspy. The sound is actually really annoying.

    Has anyone had this problem?

    Regards,

Hi! Thanks for the idea... I opened it up, cleaned it, noise is still there. Any more suggestions?

My T61 is 14 months old, exactly the same problem just started for me too. Fan seems to have 2 speeds, well, off, low and high. Even low is noisy, and it starts after about 2 minutes. I disassembled, blew out the fan assy, reassembled, same problem. I think part of the problem is the heatsink seating, the silicon was kinda dry, so maybe poor heat transfer. I am going to take it apart, clean off the cpu/heatsink, and use new thermal compound. But while it is open again, I am going to figure out which fan assy it is, looks like there are several different ones it might be. I'll see if I can order the assembly, too bad I can't just get the fan. I wouldn't be surprised if the bearing is going on it.
Seems like bad fans is a common problem for Lenovo. Seen the 84+ page thread about the S10 fans on the Lenovo forum? I was going to buy one, glad I didn't.

I think you need to grease the fan bearings or change it.

Is changing out the fan going to void the warranty? Also... where can I get a replacement fan?

If it is under warranty why don't you have it serviced?

That would be ideal, replacing the fan would likely void your warranty and may be a bit of a pain to get at completely.

A possible solution is to try and undervolt your CPU. By undervolting your CPU you are able to reduce heat significantly thus making your fan run less. (undervolting guide)

What did you clean your fan out with?

I had this issue and ordered a fan direct from Lenovo, if you have built pc's in the past and your hands on with computer hardware as I am, its pretty easy to change. Just need to service manual for your T61.

Is the fan the most easily to break part (beside the screen, that is ;) ) in a laptop and perhaps desktop also ?

i have an R61 and mines also just over a year old now and it makes noise like no other. Its nice to see that not just the R series has this problem. My fan has been buzzing and humming away for quite a few months now. I for tpfancontrol installed and I just keep it on level 7 all the time now. I have been able to keep the idle temps around 38c and while under load it gets up to 60-65c. Unfornatually I have been having a problem with lines on my display see my post Here I am trying to narrow it down to what im going to need to buy in order to fix it.

Yep! But it was a T60p at about 18 months. I called Lenovo. They sent a box. It's fine now. Highly recommmended if you are still in warranty, which you should be if it is less than a year old. My warranty is 3 years. Odds are, they will get to do that again, based on how long the first on lasted.
