I was planning to purchase a used T61, but I'm concerned about the defective GPU from nVidia. If it breaks will Lenovo cover it?

You should be and most likely they won't cover it if it's not under warranty. That's why the prices for T61/R61 with the nVidia GPUs are lower.

No, Lenovo will not cover it unless it's still within warranty, and most T61 machines are no longer under warranty.

I never had a problem with my T61 (and I had the nvidia gpu). all hell broke loose when the battery started crapping out (I hear that tends to happen to Lenovo batteries) and the adapter cable frayed... and when the screen got cracked... that too. sad times, those were

I guess you were unlucky, Lenovo batteries do go down over time though certain brands can fare better than others. Not sure about the adapter cable and it must be some force to crack the screen as they're usually reinforced with a magnesium LCD roll cage inside.

My second hand 3 yr old T61 runs fine, even took it on holiday with me recently in humid conditions and took all the bumps and knocks in the hand luggage compartment on long haul flights (economy class too!). My system is the Intel variant so I don't need to worry about the Nvidia GPU failure. There should be some competitive prices for these systems in comparison to the NVIDIA Quadro systems so if you don't want to gamble on the system durability then opting for the Intel version of the T61 is certainly not a bad option.

on the other hand, some T61 such as mine run with overclocked GPUs all their life, and thats 62% overclock ... hell yes, 3rd year I think already.

    good luck on yours

Sony and Sanyo battery tend to suffer lot of problems, whether it is in a Thinkpad or a HP.

T61 LCD is one of the best reinforced at that time, a person weighing 80 kg could stand on it without cracking it.
