I have recently encountered a problem while using my new t61. Every so often while I am on IE of Firefox the explorer will completely freeze. I am still able to access other programs for a short time afterwards before the entire system freezes. CTRL + ALT + DEL makes the screen go black but then returns with the message that the security options could not be opened. I was using RMclock for a while but when this started occuring i stopped. Unfortunately the computer continues to lock up even after discontinuing its usage. Any help/idea/suggestions?

I forgot to add that i added a gig of corsair ram. I checked the ram and both modules seem fine. Could this be the culprit? It seems like a software problem to me.

Interesting. I'm having the exact same problem. I'll be browsing the internet (most often with Firefox, but sometimes with IE) and the browser will lock. At that point I can still access other menus/program, but it's a downward spiral. Within moments, the whole system is frozen. I've tried "ending" the program, restarting the computer, etc., but nothing works. The only solution is a hard shutdown and restart.

I also have an extra gig of ram, but I can't recall at the moment what brand. I was hoping some of the recent BIOS/Vista upgrades would help, but no such luck.

Anyone else experiencing this? It's exactly as the OP described. Perhaps we can get to the bottom of whatever is causing the trouble.

I only use firefox. I use to have an occasional 3-4 second pause where firefox would not respond, but never any freezes or BSOD or anything requiring a hard shut down. There was an update to firefox a few weeks ago. I haven't had a problem with the most recent version.

    Consider a clean install.

I've been having the same experience lately. Freezes up maybe once or twice a day during internet usage.

As it just recently started for me after a couple months of never having experienced this, I presume it may be because of a recent Vista update.

I don't use Vista, but this seems logical if it's the only recent change made to your system. Have you made any other recent changes - added or deleted apps or even made any hardware changes? If so, going back to a previous state which worked without the freezes is what I'd suggest, and see if that resolves the issue.

Use MemTest to confirm its not your RAM thats defective.

If thats not the cause, use the Guide on these forums to perform a clean install.

Pretty sure I've not installed anything new but I'll go through my add/delete list. Also going to run memory diagnostics in PC Doctor.

If things continue, I'll end up doing the clean install.

Definitely something is up because boot is a bit more sluggish than in the past. Nothing crazy, but it's different.

System still runs damn good so I'm not too worried about at present. Thanks for the thought though.

I recently had random system hang in Vista Business 32bit.

I installed all the updates and then lastly updated the system BIOS to v1.22 (7luj08us). After which I have had no end of troubles with system hangs on the desktop without launching any programs. This I think only usually happens when powered by the battery source but maybe it's both battery and mains???

I had read threads on the T61 Latest BIOS (v1.22) and PCI-E graphics sleep (S3). See Microsoft KB937500 ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=170935&highlight=t61+bios).

I eventually installed the update but my system still suffered from random system hangs from boot. I even restored the OS using the recovery discs but this too suffered from hangs.

I then booted to safe mode to get the backed up BIOS (C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\session\7luj08us\bios.bak), and then reflashed this after booting to DOS with a USB flash disk.

My system is not hang free... : )

This solved my T61 lockup issue.

I hope this may help someone.

    Taff

I've had my t61 for about 3 months now and the first few weeks I was having those problems. I don't know exactly what fixed it for me but it's anyone of a number of things.

1)Try uninstalling thinkvantage access connections if you don't use it. I know that got rid of the 5 second delay I had whenever opening IE.

2)Try updating your Intel Turbo Memory or Intel Matrix Manager drivers.

    3) Either uninstall or stop the active protection system.

I remember when it would happen to me, it would only happen while I was on battery power. Is this the same for you guys?

If those don't work then I would recommend a clean install. I would recommend a clean install anyways. Your computer will run much better and more to your liking.
