I have heard many different stories regarding RAM and Vista 32, 64 and the different versions; so I would like the final word from knowledgeable people like you guys at this forum. I currently have T61 14 inch with 2GB ram running Vista Ultimate 32bit. I ultimately would like to have 4GB, but it is expensive so I want to know if it will work fully with my computer and operating system. Some told me that Vista 32bit can’t use more than 3GB, but then others told me that since I have Ultimate Vista 32 bit it will see all four Gigs, but no more. Others, have told me version does not matter and that only the Bits matter and only the 64 bit will see 4 GB to 8 GB. What is that maximum ram which Vista Ultimate 32 bits will recognize on a T61 14 inch? Does anyone happen to known the model number so I can go to the micro center? Or a cheaper store? I hope I can spend less than $300.
    Thanks

k thanks. So just to be clear. Around 3.5GB max ram with Vista 32bit regardless of version and 4GB or more with 64 Bit again regardless of version?

it is specified on your order - you would have to select 64 bit from a list in order to get 64 bit.

so I got the 2GB Ram sticks bringing my comp to a total of 4GB, Vista 32 Ultimate only detects 3070MB like you guys said. BUT that extra GB from 2 to 3 GB detected makes a huge difference I am running virtual PC with XP Pro with 1GB ram and multi taking on the host with Office, Outlook, WMP, IE and it is going so smooth compared to before. I can’t wait for my 64bit disc arrives since the activation code is the same. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EVERY GO GET 4GB IT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE. I used to think it was my processor at 2.2 GHZ T7500

The only 64-bit version i've seen Lenovo offer is the Vista Business 64-bit and you have to select that option.

    toms hardware put up something

my take: vista 32bit get 3 or 4gb ram, don't go to vista 64bit unless you are willing to get 8gb. Kind of controversial in their forums, but it sounds like to me if you really want 64bit and most speed, you should go 8gb, otherwise keep at 32bit 3gb (or 4gb) for the most driver support (imo)

If you're worried about price then grab 1 more gb and stick at 3gb

if you want to use virtual pc (like the other guy), go ahead and spring for 2 more gb (4gb total)

I'd stick 4GB in there just in case. I don't think SO-DIMM's are going to get much cheaper, there's a glut of laptop memory these days. Easier just to get 4GB, then not really worry about whether you need more memory or not, since you'll be maxed out at that point.

Not to cloud the waters, but you should also look at this thread.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=179172

It is mainly for T61P's, but some with T61's have the same issue. I have a similar issue with an R61, but I suspect a different brand of memory might solve the problem.

I really respect tom's hardware but this is crazy.

Yeah, a bit weird. The way I see it, if you want 4+ GB available, go 64-bit. Sure, modern desktop motherboards will support 8 GB, 2 per slot, but for most people, 8's overkill. I've got 4GB at the moment in my desktop, and I see no real reason to go all the way up to 8, 64-bit or no.

Besides, that, we're talking notebooks here on this forum, and to the best of my knowledge (of course, I may be wrong), you can't get a notebook that will support 8GB.
