I have started to notice something new happening on my T61 recently. When I open the lid of my notebook after an extended period of time (1+ hour), Windows XP will initiate the shutdown sequence and start closing everything including itself.

I don't get it. I have my battery manager set to do nothing when I close the lid, and there is no action I can specify for lid open anyway. Why would Windows decide to shut down when I open the lid? This was not happening until recently and I can't recall making any major change to anything.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    RA

This happened to me once. I woke up my T61p from sleep, and I got some sort of "System shutdown initiated by Authority/System" message and a countdown. Some preliminary research indicated it might be a virus, but I did a full virus scan and nothing showed up, did a windows update with the malicious tool removal, and it never happened since. So either it was completely random or the malicious tool got rid of some virus.

I've seen that before on a desktop, although in that case the system would always eventually shutdown itself and not long after start. In that case that was a virus (sasser, if I recall correctly).

Assuming you installed it, maybe it's an SP3 "feature" ?

Does the Event Viewer give any hints as to what is happening?
