Looks like they've discontinued widescreen for the R series as well. Lenovo could be low on standard screen supplies so they'll temporarily stop selling standard screen laptops, or they're permanently going to discontinue selling it; no one really knows.

The widescreen change over was inevitable. It was just a matter of time.

There is a large group who prefer standard screens. On a 15" it isn't such a big deal as both offer 1050 vertical resolution, but on a 14" notebook I much prefer SXGA+ to WXGA+ which is the best you can get on a 14" wide notebook. The extra vertical resolution comes in handy for things like Office and Internet.

    This is a sad thing... I prefer 1400*1050 rather than 1440*900 T.T

That is sad but not surprising. The standard screen specs are a bit lower (brightness for instance) so it was probably an older technology component and as people ask for the latest and greatest, they had to freshen the ThinkPad product line. What is coming up are LED backlit screens which will be even brighter than current widescreen models.

I saw this coming when I bought this T61 a month ago. But no matter what, I remain thinking I bought a great machine for a low price. My next ThinkPad (yes, I'm sold to this brand now :) ) will have a LED screen... but I will buy it when it is about to be replaced by something better and again get a good deal. For now, I'm typing from my T61 outside on a sunny warm Saturday with the noise if birds in the background :) I have to crank up the screen brightness to 100% but still get 4h30 of battery with the 9 cells :) I'm fine with this.

I dislike having choices taken away, but after dreading this day for a year, I believe I can live with a widescreen on my next purchase.

Certainly I look forward to a brighter, LED lit screen. But I do wish contrast ratios would be improved to what is typical for LCD monitors and LCD TVs.

Lenovo is getting ready to roll out their new thinkpads, so I presume this is some changes that they are doing.

My opinion is only a vast minority prefer standard screen after trying both. Humans see in a widescreen rectangle shape, not a square shape. It seems only natural that our viewing devises should be scaled like our sight.

    It inevitable, and its progress.

Only good for watching movie, wide screen. They may revive standard screen in 2 years. That is my guess.

I've used standard and widescreen laptops. I'd love to trade my 4:3 T60 for a widescreen 14.1'' laptop
