I don't own one of these, but I know quite a few people that have T61 laptops (Thinkpad University) and it seems a lot of people are having problems with these overheating severely.

Do the T61s usually have heat problems or bad fans and overheat and fry themselves?

When I had my T61 14.1 inch before I gave it to my sister it was the coolest running notebook I have ever owned now my Thinkpad T400 runs cooler than the T61.

Mine was sent to repair since it was overheating, they replaced the cooling system and now it's normal.

Edit: Although, the new system is noisier, but I guess that's better than it overheating

I have a 14" T60 that runs pretty warm, but my 15.4" T61p runs cool during normal usage. I use a notebook cooler when gaming or else it does heat up a bit though.

The thing is that saying T61s overheat is being somewhat vague.

You have to break it down into chassis size and what graphics type it has (discrete or integrated). Processor speed factors less unless you're doing some major overclocking.

The larger chassis will have better heat dissipation and discrete cards run hotter.
