so i got my new t61 today. ordered a 1x2gb stick of RAM. the t61 had 512mb initially, and when i put the 2gb stick in. it only sees 2047mb of RAM. when the 512mb is taken out it sees 2027mb. so the 512mb ram does make a difference. but... not big enough. the t61 with vista home premium maxes out at 4gb of RAM doesn't it?

I thought the 32 bit Windows OS's could only recognize up to 2 gigs (2048 megs) or RAM.

3 gig not 2 for 32 bit OSes
if you want 4 gig RAM seen you have to use 64 bit Windows

Do you have X3100 Intel or a discrete chip?

okay nevermind? if any of you are familiar with the lenovo instructions online for changing RAM, it tells you to check using hte thinkvantage button. And that's what i did. but when i go to system from control panel in vista. it says i have 2.5gb of RAM. anyways... there's still a problem i guess.

Same problem for me. I just got my t61p 5 hours ago. I removed the 2 *1gig and replace by 2 * 2 gigs.

When I look trought LEnovo system information, I see 3,069.50mb.

    I have Vista ultimate 32bits.

Should I wait until Lenovo and/or Microsoft fix this issue?

I'm asking that question because I want to sell my 2*1 gig provided originally with my laptop.

    Well......
Looking at the tabout, this is the information I found for the memory limit.

    Maximum memory capacity may
    require the replacement of standard
    component with largest supported component
    available. On ThinkPad systems
    with an Intel 945GM, 945PM, GM965, or
PM965 chipset, even though it is possible
to physically install 4GB of memory,
the actual amount of memory addressable
by an operating system will be limited
to 3GB. This limitation does not exist
with the Intel GM965 and PM965 with
    the 64-bit operating systems Windows
XP Professional 64-bit and Windows Vista
    64-bit Editions.

I have read on previous threads that if you are running 32-bit windows, the OS will only recognize 3Gig. That being the case, is there any point to installing more than 3GB?

There is no point to installing over 3Gb if you have a 32-bit OS.

Well you can technically for Dual Channel, but it really doesn't affect it enough to be justified.
