Thank god for ThinkVantage, or else i wouldnt be able to even post this on here. Right now im running on the Rescue and Recovery OS, and i have a problem with the operating system. I decided to turn off my computer a few hours ago (mostly i hibernate for the quick bootup), and when tried to turn it back on, i would receive a blank screen after where the Windows logo would normally show up ( ./nogui).

I'm currently running Vista Premium x32, and i have tried multiple times to start up windows to no avail. I checked previous threads using search, and after i submit this thread i am going to try removing the battery, plugging the laptop and restarting. If this does not work, i would be happy if someone could push me in the right direction to get this fixed. Id normally try to stay away from Lenovo's customer service if possible, because from what i have heard, they really arent helpful -__-

    Thanks in advance,
    Laurence

    Update- Running on ac power alone did not do anything, as a previous thread suggested. I'm close to panicking ;___;

Did you update the bios? Try re-installing Vista.

do you have a normal vista disk? there is a somewhat half a$$ fix boot built in. sounds like the vista boot record will need repair. should be automated pretty much.

I left my laptop overnight to see if it would take its time and try to fix itself miraculously, but that failed too. And i dont remember if my T61 came with the vista book disk, and i cannot find out until friday when i get home from school. :[

Hm, try purging the suspend data. (I'm not sure how to do that though)

ACtually, the vista distribution has a rather nice bootable diagnosis and repair section. Instead of doing and install after booting the dvd, select repair.

And count your blessings that you have such a nice OS as Vista.

Well, despite a combination of different attempts to get my laptop to work again, Vista still refuses to load. Every single time after the gui symbol and the "windows is loading" i receive a blank screen and my laptop stops transferring data, just sitting like a vegetable.

One of my friends has a vista boot disk, so hopefully things will be better from there when i get it from him. But it's kind of weird how this sort of thing happens right out of the blue.

Also on another note, i highly doubt that there is anything wrong with Vista itself, because Thinkvantage pulls its data from the Vista OS, does it not? I'm assuming it is just the booting that's messed up.

    :<

edit- using a Windows boot disk, i still received the same problem from before; in other words, nothing changed. :|

Edit2- Searching through Event Viewer i believe i found something that may be related to my problem. The date and time basically match when i shut down my laptop, and there is a registry error... ./copypaste:

    1. I dont know if that rolls back the registry (because im almost positive that it is the cause of the lcd black screen of death during windows startup)

safe mode is your friend. did you try it? tvt_reg is a service from Lenovo that monitors your programs to verify that they are trusted. (or something similar) you should be able to use the recovery console or add/remove to delete this program or key.

Safe mode failed, as well as all its other options.

Thinkvantage's repair system failed as well, as nothing would happen at all whenever i initiated anything. I asked a few people and theyre saying it's an icon that fails to load up that bogs the entire system down due to Vista updates... They recommend i send it to Lenovo to get it fixed or somethin.

send it in for OS problems? i think the fellas here could talk you out of that one. did you try running a checkdisk /r from another disk? sometimes is the miracle cure all. anyway, this is a great time to follow the clean install thread. sounds like you have nothing to lose.

keep pressing F8 after you reboot/turn on your computer

you should be able to access a menu to boot to safe mode or last know good config.

if that doesnt work, use the hidden partition to reload vista

or you can use the "anytime vista upgrade" disc to perform a clean install

    goodluck

Yeah, i tried safe mode and last good known config; all ./fail :\

Didnt try the hidden partition yet, maybe later on tomorrow; somehow i have gotten alot of studying done with my laptop on the fritz, haha...

and i already tried to boot from the Windows Anytime cd, which also failed. Am i able to install the operating system without having to dump all the files on my hard drive? I don't usually format because i dont need to... I'm having MORE friends check my laptop now~

if i was in your shoes i would
    1. hookup the hard drive externally and pull anything i possible could from it.
    2. use a boot cd to format the drive
    3. start over using the guide here, youll have to use the key on the bottom
    or
    3. get a newer bigger drive for $100, take the old one and beat it till the platters are sticking out and the bearing fluid is leaking.
    4. feel good about yourself

i am a little confused though, never seen such an unrecoverable error due to an update. checkdisk?

haha i would do that if i had spares and if i was at home; being at the dorms suck really bad, because i dont have what i need to do a serious full scale repair.

And yes, i will remember this moment, so when i switch out hard drives im going to beat this 70gig to scrap metal after chucking large magnets at it.

    Bump-

More people have had this problem ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=252896)

Boot disks dont work; memtest passed, hard drive SMART tests passed, UCBD could only do so much; something's seriously wrong here... I was able to 'rescue' my important files on my hard drive, but when i tried to return the hard drive to original factory state, data transfer completely stops and nothing happens. I'm getting frustrated.

oh joy, now the laptop doesnt even recognize that Vista is installed. It filters me directly to Windows Setup, which goes to ThinkVantage's Rescue and Recovery.

just give in. clean install from scratch. dont even worry about rescue and recovery. as you can see it is really more of a pain than its worth. blow out the partitions, start clean. resistance is futile.
