Hi, I have a S/PDIF cable and want to connect it to my stereo.

I've used this particular S/PDIF cable before on my desktop computer and it worked just fine. However, on that desktop computer my sound card has a S/PDIF output.

How do I connect this to my T61? I went to ratshack and took my laptop with me. They gave me a Phono to 1/8" adapter. It didn't work

How can I make this work? What type of adapter do I need?

edit: I also made sure to go into sounds and make the S/PDIF output "default."

The T61 does not have an SPDIF output so you'll need to get one either by adding soundcard (Creative Labs makes one) that has one or by using one of the USB ports and feeding it to a converter box like the one below.

You can also get a mini plug to RCA cable to connect the two but the sound quality with this method is usually mediocre at best.

Or you can buy the advanced mini-dock for example and have the COAX SPDIF output option. I use the docking station in my office and for my home theatre sound system. Works great since I can also hook up the TV using a DVI to HDMI cable. No more dedicated HTPC and the dock provides instant access to power, DVI, SPDIF, USB remote receiver and gigabit LAN in one quick docking action.

I'm curious, does the advanced mini-dock have COAX SPDIF input? That'd be really awesome.

Yes, it handles just about anything over coax or optical.

    No, just output.
