I have a T61 sitting on an Advanced Mini Dock and want to connect a USB hard drive. The drive is 2.5" and is powered through the USB connection. If I connect it to USB ports on the Thinkpad itself, everything is fine. However, if I connect it to USB ports on the Dock, I experience problems coming out of sleep and hibernate. On waking, the drive becomes disconnected for a short time - the system makes a USB disconnect sound followed by a (re-)connect sound. This means that any programs which were accessing files on the hard disk before sleeping have lost their connection to the file - for example, any Explorer windows that were open before sleeping have disappeared.

I believe this occurs due to a short delay between wakeup and the dock's USB ports actually providing power for the drive.

Until now I have worked around this issue by simply connecting the hard drive to the laptop directly. However now I need the laptop's USB ports for other things and am looking to buy a powered USB hub to use with the hard drive - something like this. Am I likely to see the same problem with an external hub as I am seeing with the dock? If so, would a hub which advertises "always on" USB ports, such as this, solve the problem?
