T61 Sound skips and glitches in Vista

Hi,

when I'm playing sound (music through Winamp, videos through YouTube) I get an occasional skip...like it studders.

I'm pretty if I put XP SP2 on this machine it wouldn't have this problem.

Any others experience this with Vista? (My sound and other drivers are up to date).

can you tell us what kind of hardware you're using? This is the thinkpad forum, so i'm assuming you're using a T61? The machine in your sig is the one you're talking about?

Try uninstalling the drivers (assuming they are the lenovo ones) and just let vista install a generic one. I had the same issue with sound bleeps and skips etc... only when on battery though. However, I'm pretty sure it's the lenovo audio drivers that are causing all audio problems. The only downside to uninstalling them is the built in mic discontinues to work.

like right now i'm playing a youtube video in another tab

i replied to a post just now and the sound stopped for a sec and then continued.
only does this sometimes but every annoying.

Right now i'm playing a mp3 in Winamp and when I browse a forum or just even typing something in a window, the audio glitches for a quick second.

as I was taking these screen shots with the Vista snipping tool, my audio glitches at least 4 times. My audio drivers are updated so not sure why it's doing that.

 

But did you try uninstalling the audio drivers and letting windows install the default one like I suggested?

If you installed the lenovo drivers for the audio, the ones that say soundmax than that is probably the problem.

 

Yeah I can't lose the mic though.

Did you play around with services? The Multimedia Class Scheduler must be on automatic and running to prevent stuttering.

 

where do I look for this?

 

Right click My computer -> Manage. On the left, under Services and Applications click on Services. Then on the right is a list of services. Scroll down until you find Multimedia Class Scheduler. If it's not running, double click on it, set it to automatic and click Start.

 

yeah, it's set on 'automatic' by default

I can report the EXACT same problem on my new T61 -- a very annoying audio skip in Vista. I have tried both the default Vista drivers and the Lenovo drivers, same problem. I check and I have that media class server started automatically by default.. has their been anything new learned about this problem?

 

I think my audio skips as well, not that I listen to music all that much but I noticed skips and breaks in some of the songs I've been playing. Not sure if its the drivers or the OS but there is something wrong with Soundmax for sure.

my desktop at home (E6600) w/ Vista Business has terrible skips in audio (WMP and Internet)

 

The weird part is we were previously Vista on the older T60 with no problem at all.. prior to the T61 with Vista I have never seen this issue before ever. The other very unusual thing is that it doesn't seem to be directly related to the SoundMAX chip either; we have tried using a PreSonus Firebox firewire audio card with the T61 and have the same problem? Can it be a strange chipset issue or something?

 

I have Vista on a desktop as well, no issues there whatsoever... I think this is hardware related. I tested this on a fresh install on T61 before, prior to loading Lenovo drivers, Windows soundmax drivers are not much help either.

 

This is a driver issue, almost guaranteed. I wish people woul;d stop pointing fingers at vista at every hint a of a problem.

I had the same problem; I'm running Vista Business on a T61. I downloaded the latest audio driver off this page:

I estimate that I'm getting only 20-30% of the number of glitches I was experiencing before, so it's worth the download.

I'm still having this problem... I have the latest drivers (I think they came out within the week).

I have a couple other PCs running the same Vista version and they do not experience studdering, ever. I've had Vista ever since it came out, so it's not a totally-Vista problem.

Anybody able to solve this? I will try to give Lenovo a call, as I am less than satisfied with my system, and this is one of the issues that's bothering me (have had laptop for about 2.5 weeks).

 

I'm using MediaMonkey now and it seems to be working better.

 

Well, I can be using Winamp or anything else, it still studders. I mean, Windows sounds studder too, so I doubt its the media player.

I honestly think it's not the sound driver though, but some other driver. I notice a slight drop in wireless speed when the sound studders too. I think the whole system kind of stops for a quarter of a second.

 

You may be on to something, I've had these sound issues before but now they seem to have gone away. I'm working on the wire though and WiFi is off with my current setup. Could this be related to the Intel 4965AGN in some way?

 

Hi guys, I was too lazy to register here but here's the solution which worked for me:

Start regedit and find Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AudioSrv

Find DependOnService and simply remove the value MMCSS from the list.
Leave AudioEndpointBuilder and RpcSs there. Now reboot and try if it worked.

 

I've made the registry change and downloaded the latest T61 audio drivers (released August 28th 2007). I'm still able to provoke glitches. It may be fewer than before, but they do occasionally occur.

Ever noticed how windows drags are reduced to "slow motion" every now and again? The window you are trying to drag is almost stuck for a moment. I've noticed a few audio glitches occuring while this is taking place.

 

I am also having the audio glitch problem with my T61 running on Vista. I noticed that the glitches are more when I open a new window, or minimize or close an existing window. Can anybody please help me fix this problem? This is really annoying me.

 

So I searched all the forums here at notebookreview.com and found that most people uncheck the "sound enhancement" option under sound properties from the control panel.
I tried that but it didn't work for me. Can it be related to the graphics card using the system memory? I am guessing this because whenever I put some stress on graphics (by opening up too many windows and minimizing and restoring them very fast), my sound skips/glitches. I have nVidia NVS140M card. Please help.

I plan to have Lenovo repair/replace it since no-one has come up with a solution to this hugely annoying problem yet. This system was way too expensive to have the sound card not function properly.

This has been irritating me for weeks.
The Problem is the 'superfetch' service which "enables programs and files to load much faster than they would on Windows XP–based PCs" by "monitor[ing] which applications you use the most and preload[ing] these into your system memory so they'll be ready when you need them."[1] Unfortuneately though, microsoft engineers are not -quite- clever enough to write a service that knows me better than I know me and can predict my future. The result is a service which uses a silly amount of memory and causes these processor spikes.

Killing it (by ending the service then going from control panel: Administrative Tools --> Services --> Right Click "Superfetch" --> Properties --> Startup Type: Disabled.) decreaced the amount of memory the guilty svchost process is using from 35 to 5 MB on my machine. And I haven't seen a processor spike for a while... Still, give Vista time and it'll find a new way to increase your blood pressure.

I called Lenovo about this problem. They sent me a new harddrive similar to the one that came with my system (Seagage 7200 rpm 100 GB). This seems to have solved the problem. Also, I no longer have to put up with the annoying, constantly recurring 'marble drop' noise that would come from the old drive. I guess the glitching problem had to do with a defective harddrive cache or something. I no longer get any glitching worth mentioning. Yes, that means there MAY still be a few on occasion, but it is no longer a problem - and I say that as a person with VERY sensitive ears. ;o) Even the Windows start-up sound plays fluently, and that one sound in particular used to glitch majorly!

 

Has anyone in this thread solved the skipping audio glitches on their T61 other than the member that got a new hard drive? (He had a 100GB, i have the 200GB Hitachi, so I don't think this is a hard drive problem.)

I'm experiencing the same issues everyone else in this thread is having - random but frequent skips and audio glitches on a T61p with Vista (Ultimate) - it's driving me crazy. I had a T60p with all the same software and no problems.

This machine is supposed to be faster and better, so what's up? Definitely a hardward or drive problem?

I hope someone has figured out a solution, and if so, what it is?

 

I am having the same issue with my T61 but I have XP installed. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers but nothing has helped.

It only happens when the laptop is on battery. If it is on AC the audio is fine. Is this true for everyone?

 

Today, my t61 was working on AC, moving a bunch of mp3s around and the password screen saver would pop and after a couple times I noticed my audio in both speakers went away. I rebooted and then it worked ok again. I have another post about this.

Hi,

Audio glitches are sometime caused by the CPU Powermanagement.
(Additionally when you try undervolting CPU with NHC or RMClock)

Solution could be to disable C4 States with Rmclock or other program
or setting your powermanager profile to max or min performance, so
the CPU can´t change their powerstates. From min to max.

I have T61 and XP, and sound and video stutters when on battery. I have updated everything, and set powermanagement to maximum performance.

This seems to have done the trick for me. I don't know why the update Lenovo service didn't do it...

 

I just got used to the stuttering.

I searched the web, they just said it was the way Vista handled network activity and audio that causes it. There is no fix apparently.

 

I and others where i work have the same issue on the t61 corporate image using XP professional. This is not just a vista issue. Its an thinkpad driver, battery or system board issue.

 

OK GUYS got it sorted !!!

doesnt matter if i was on xp or vista on DC sound/video was perfect on my T61 ,when unplugged and running on battery -non stop sound/video/text editing breaks.
DAMN wasted about 3days to fix it.I've been messing around with POWER PROFILES , changing from VISTA to XP back and forth ,digging in registry ,installing/reinstalling/deinstalling drivers (audio/power management) It was driving me crazy...
Finally by mistake i connected network cable and sound skipping ...was gone!!
SO I turned off Ethernet network card:
my computer(right click) properties-devices manager-network adapters-ethernet adapter(right click)- disable
(Im using wireless connection anyway)
and EVERYTHING WORK PERFECT no stops and breaks.It must have been ETHERNET driver .
