    T61 Thermal Sensor and CPU Upgrade

    Hi,

    I'm looking at upgrading my T7300 merom to a T9300 penryn.

    From reading it seems that the T61 has two types of temperature sensors being an analogue one and a digital one.

    Newer penryn processors seem to use a digital thermal sensor and installing one of these into a T61 which has an analogue sensor throws a "thermal sensing error" message upon bootup. Also the latest 2.17 bios doesn't solve the issue.

    Has anyone had any experience with a similar CPU upgrade and is there anyway to tell what type of sensor you have?

    Unless you have a specific need, I doubt it's worth the time or expense.

    How did you get this information? Did you install/have a Penryn CPU and are getting this error?
    The best way to find out if your board is compatible is to built one on line and see if the motherboard # is the same as yours.

    i tried actually this upgrapde on T61p from T7700 to T9300
    i get this sensor error on boot, and then the notebook stops completely
    reverted back to T7700 and everything fine

    Did you try the above? From what I remember from when I upgraded my CPU the model number for my motherboard and the ones with the Penryn CPU was the same I think. If it is then the newest BIOS should do the trick. In any event please let us know what you found out I am very curious.

    Ive done some research since my post.

    the ability to run a penryn based T8xxx or T9xxx CPU on your T61/p will depend on your motherboard and doesn't have anything to do with the BIOS.

    to start go to the IBM warranty page here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=LOOK-WARNTY#sw and enter your type and serial number.

    You'll then get a page detailing each component in your system with a FRU number.

    Scroll down and look for 'SYSTEM PLANAR'. Mine states 42W7652 as the FRU.

    From my reviews of what people have got to work on their systems and the maintenance manual I've concluded the following.

    Merom based T7xxx CPU's will work on the following motherboards

    - 42W7651,
    - 42W7652,
    - 42W7653, and
    - 42W7875.

    Penyrn based T8xxx and T9xxx CPU's will work on the following motherboards

    - 42W7876, and
    - 42W7877.

    I've got an R61e with 42W7827 as the system planar. I fitted an X9000 CPU and keep getting the Thermal error. I think I'm therefore limited to the Merom based CPU's.

    EDIT: Just hit ESC and it works fine. Only downside is an annoiying beep on start up.

    I have a T61 6457 4JU and was told by several chip suppliers the X9000 would work so I bought one on e-bay and installed it last night and received the thermal error detected message and my machine shut down. I have upgraded my BIOS TO 2.1...
    Have you found a way to determine what thermal sensor, digital or analog a particular machine has, can it be found somewhere in the BIOS?

    since my last post I have done more research and according to Lenovo the Mother Board is the deciding factor as to CPU match up, not BIOS or PM/GM 965 Chip Set. My T61 has a 42W7652 board and per Lenovo the highest upgrade I can legally do is a T7700.
    How ever as some one said, if you install an X9000 for example and get the Thermal Error Detected message, just hit escape and your machine will boot normally. I did so and then ran CPUID Hardware monitor to check my CPU Temps. They run in an acceptable range at idle and under load.
    In one sense the Escape key just adds extra security, but on the other hand, my HUGE CONCERN is when I hit escape, do I disable the BIOS and CPU sensors so that I loose my fail safe shut down from CPU/BIOS sensors if my fan ports get blocked, fan malfunctions for any reason, will my T61 still shut down or MELT DOWN? So far I cannot find an answer to my question...
