Hi, new to the forum. I'm usually on top of this kind of stuff, but all of my previous laptops have had S-video. I was wondering if anyone knew any VGA cable converters that could go straight to RCA cables and/or S-video cables. I am looking for the best quality possible, as long as the price stays under 100. I am looking for something that won't just only work on HD-TVs as well. I have found a lot online, but I am unsure if they are compatible with my T61.

Also, if possible, I would love to have one that was HD-TV, RCA, and S-video compatible.

any help, to actual products would be greatly appreciated.

My main goal for this is to play movies on my TV, so video quality is kind of important.

Thank you in anticipation for your help, I used the search function, but none of the previous threads seemed to concern all of the needs i have with this cable.

S-Video doesn't give incredible video quality; it is only better than standard composite video.

Does your TV have any component video inputs? It may be possible to get a VGA-to-component video adapter, which will at least give you 480p video.

I was kind of looking for something that would work on multiple TVs which is why i wanted to see if there is a high quality one that has S-video or RCA(i think that is the red, yellow, and white cables).

Composite and S-Video are limited to SDTV by pure bandwidth requirements. You need VGA, component, or HDMI inputs on the TV for HD.

well there are plenty of cable and converters out there...but your gonna be restricted by the quality of the s-video cable...a general rule of thumb is that your system is only as strong as your weakest link.

I have my t61p connected in the bedroom to a 42inch Panasonic plasma with this

    http://www.svideo.com/hiwire.html

it works like a charm, very crisp detailed pic, a bit pricy. But if you have a desktop replacement for a laptop and a 42 inch in your bedroom, well...

Sounds like apart from that, the next available option is to go with a Thinkpad Advanced MiniDock, which has a DVI-D ouput, which could be converted to HDMI with a cable. Unless of course, the TV has a DB-15 VGA in.

The cheapest option I saw (no guarantees, but you haven't lost much in gambling) is this VGA to S-Video/composite adapter at Monoprice. That said, I find that laptop output looks like crap on S-Video or composite.

If you're using this for a true media experience, I'd recommend that instead of trying to hook up your laptop, you get a media extender box that can play video/audio files from your machine. I bought the D-Link DSM-520, which can play DivX/Xvid files, plus quite a few other audio/video formats (even .VOB files) streamed from a computer, or via direct USB connected flash drive or hard disk. I have it hooked up via HDMI to my Panasonic 42" plasma.

The Thinkpad is a great laptop, but it's really not designed for the goal you have in mind.
