    Hey all,

I'm about to purchase a T61 since I have a non-Meyer EPP pricing since my father works for IBM. Anyways, I was configuring my T61 and I am at the point with Memory being cheap right now and all that I'm going to install it myself.

I am planning on spending about 200-275 dollars to get 4GB of memory, but I can't find if the Vista is 32 or 64 bit. I know if it is 32, I essentially wasted money, so I'm trying to avoid that...so does anyone know what the story is with the type of Vista that is in the T61?

Also, would this void any warranty upgrading the memory and is it hard to do?

I started a thread about 64-bit Ultimate. That's what a sales rep told me (take it for what it's worth), but I was inquiring specifically about the 15.4" model.

Don't quote me, but if you want 64-bit Vista on any version (I'm 99% sure it can be done with Ultimate). I think you can do it if you do a clean install using a 64-bit version disk (if you know someone that has it) and use the product key on your laptop to active it. The product key you use has to be the one stored on your system, found using "Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder" http://www.magicaljellybean.com/beta/ NOT THE PRODUCT KEY ON THE STICKER.

    Then use these guides:

and this will help with drivers...

I plan to do this when I get mine.... who knows when that will be.

    FYI:

BEWARE if you think you're getting Vista 64bit installed on your T61!

Last week I ordered a T61, full gambit of options, (T7700, Windows Vista Ultimate, WWAN, etc.) $3000+

After ordering I reviewed the email confirmation and saw Vista 32bit being installed on the T7700 64bit processor. After talking with the salesrep I was told Lenovo only installs 32bit Vista as this is the licensing agreement with Microsoft and the DVD's will not be shipped with the system since one can create refresh disks from the hard-drive (not for 64bit since 32bit is installed).

I have no use for another 32bit OS especially on a 64bit processor! After confirming this with another salesrep I immediately cancelled my order. I waited 9 months for the T61 to come out and all the reviews state Vista 64bit is on the T61 but not according to the salesreps and my own order confirmation - SO BEWARE if you are expecting the 64bit Vista version is being installed on your T61!!

I ordered mine thourgh Solution for Education under my university. And there is an option for Vista Business 64 (also another option for Vista Business 32). I don't know if it is the real OS they pre-install, but anyways, you could have a try through your school/previous school.

64-bit applications won't be the standard for years (remember how many years after 32 bit came out).

By the time 64-bit applications are widely available, anything you will have bought now will become completely obsolete.

Absolutely! Yet this is slated to be a development machine for 64bit software.
