So I noticed that the Vista SP1 update was available on my desktop today (via Windows Update) but not on my new ThinkPad T61. Did some research and came to the conclusion that it was not being offered because of a "problematic" UPEK Fingerprint Sensor driver ("UPEK Fingerprint Sensor with the Tcusb.sys driver file version 1.9.2.99 or earlier" - LINK TO MSFT SUPPORT ARTICLE). Being the impatient type, I went to get the updated driver HERE (version 1.9.2.111). Installed the driver in Device Manager and now Windows Update has made the SP1 update available. I could not find an updated driver for the fingerprint sensor on the Lenovo site or through the System Update app. Hope that this helps some users looking for the SP1 update...
-
Thanks for the great advice, seems to have worked for me as well (vista 64 bit).
Will start to install sp1 now... -
Just finished upgrading my desktop and T61 and all seems to have gone smoothly (*gently knocks on wood*)...
-
Same here,
thanks again... -
I'm downloading the driver right now as we speak, I hope it works!
Did Sp1 become available to you immediately or did it require a few reboots? -
For me it did not immediately find the upgrade package, had to check twice (took ~5 min total) - no re-boot required...
-
I had the same issue with service pack 1 not showing up in my windows update. So being the impatient person I am, I installed it through the standalone installer.
I now realize I had two conflicts...
Display drivers
For x86-based computers: Igdkmd32.sys – versions between and including driver 7.14.10.1322 and 7.14.10.1403
Biometric (Fingerprint) Sensors:
UPEK Fingerprint Sensor with the Tcusb.sys driver file – version 1.9.2.99 or earlier.
I'm in the process of updating the drivers now, do you think it will have any negative effects that I dl'ed the service pack before upgrading these drivers? -
Awsome ...just what I suspected after I read the same MS article... but you saved me the work.
Thank you! -
-
I'm trying the file that I downloaded from the intel website....
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...All&OSFullName=All Operating Systems&lang=eng
When I try to run the setup, it says that this product version is not validated for this computer. So I'm not sure. -
Can anyone help with updating the intel x3100 driver?
The lenovo website has a outdated version, and the one I donwloaded from the intel website says it's not validated for this computer. -
I had the same issue with the display driver and was unable to get it updated, but I just went ahead and installed the sp1 from microsoft's website w/o the new driver. I'm up and running with sp1 and no problems. Proceed at your own risk.
-
This is rediculous,
1) The X3100 is a standard intel graphics card that a ton of people use. Why would they ever release SP 1 when it has driver issues with it.
2) You can't install the updated driver from the intel website for some reason. I'm guessing it's because you're required to install the lenovo driver for the X3100. Unfortunately the driver's lenovo is offering are outdated. -
As another user of the x3100 with a T61 that is locked out of Windows Update access to SP1, I am curious how fast Lenovo will be in responding to the need for a newer driver. How much work is involved in validating the newest Intel drivers that are available so either Lenovo or Intel will release them to us? (That is a question, not a snide comment.)
I've used my T61 without SP1 so far, so I guess I'll just have to wait until those driver validators get their work done. -
I have the same issue with the Intel X3100.
I will also wait. Apparently updating to SP1 without updating the driver will result in blue/black screens once you return from standby mode. In addition, I am reluctant to update with the Intel driver without it being validated by the Lenovo team.
Let's hope they update it this week. -
SP1 didn't show up on my windows update, tons of updates did though.
I went to the site posted in the article and downloaded the whole 400mb. I'm at school so it downloaded in about 12 minutes. Installed perfectly. -
Ye, I installed it as well. So far I'm not having any problem. I put my computer to sleep, resumed it. I've restarted several times. No issues so far. Still though, I'd like to not have a driver that's on the list that microsoft put out.
Has anyone successfully installed the updated gma 965 driver from the link below? (didn't work for me)
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...dows Vista* Business, 32-bit version&lang=eng
Side Note: Does anyone know how to e-mail Lenovo and let them know of the issue. It shouldn't be that difficult for them to update it. Especially, when you consider that intel has an updated driver on their website. -
The reason why you can't install the latest intel x3100 drivers is because it causes you to lose the brightness adjustment display information. If you're ok with that then go ahead and install it.
-
I'm not even given an option to install the new driver. When I DL the update from the intel site and run the .exe, it unloads the files to start the installation process, and then it says, "this driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer's manufacturer. Setup will exit." -
You can download the zip file instead of the exe and install it manually by going to the device manager and clicking update driver for the Display adapter while pointing it to the unzipped files.
However, as I said, I am not that desperate for SP1 (been working fine for me until today without it) so I am waiting at least 2 weeks to see if Lenovo comes up with their updated driver. -
Although I don't own a T61, I figure that my R61 would respond similarly to any problems in Windows updates. Reading this thread sure saved me the trouble of having to deal with these driver issues. Thanks for taking the hits guys
.
In all seriousness though, I'm curious on how many of you with successful installs feel that performance, battery life, and stability have improved or not improved. It's all part of the update experience, no? -
Upgrading my T61 (Vista Business 64-bit) to SP1 went very smoothly, I just started the install and it finished in an hour. I used the standalone installer instead of Windows Update.
It even bumped up my WEI score for gaming graphics from 4.7 to 4.8
Sorry to hear about the SP1 install problems... -
I doubt the audio stutter issue in Vista is resolved
-
Finally got SP1 to show up, here's my saga with solutions:
1) Eagerly tried windows update with my T61, nothing showed up of course.
2) Read the help page here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343
3) Found this thread and installed the UPEK driver - still nothing.
4) Tried the Intel X3100 .exe driver, build 1437 - would not install as others have noted.
5) Installed the 64-bit X3100 driver using the zip file instead, here: (make sure to get the 32-bit version if that's what you need)
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...All&OSFullName=All Operating Systems&lang=eng
This driver works well for me: brightness OSD is there, and no trouble waking up from sleep, my 3D games now work in full screen mode
6) WU now failed with a strange error 80072EE2, resolved by following this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=214354&highlight=80072EE2
6) WU then showed I had to install some very old X3100 driver from 9/07, Version *.1329. Installed it as directed by WU.
7) Reinstalled the X3100 build 1437 from the zip file.
8) WU now shows SP1!
I didn't want to wait for Lenovo to update the drivers - the X3100 in particular is from 11/07.
Update: SP1 didn't install on my machine even after jumping through these hoops. I was able to do the download (~120MB) and the initial install, but the portion that happens behind your back (right before and after shutdown) failed several times. Eventually the installer gave up and reverted all the changes. WU now offers SP1 as a brand new update again. -
Downloaded the SP1 standalone install file from Microsoft and installed on my (15") T61p with no problems whatsoever. Didn't download anything from Lenovo beforehand, the machine was up to date with windows patches.
Seems good, definitely improved network file transfer speeds for me so gets a thumbs up so far! -
I downloaded SP1 through the standalone installer. It installed sucessfully. However, after the installation I saw the list of drivers that conflicted with it. I realized I had 2 of those driver conflicts. I updated the UPEK driver. And I updated the x3100 driver by using the zip file.
So, now I don't have any driver conflicts. But, as the poster above me said, I no longer see the brightness display thingy when I change my screen brightness. To me, its not a big deal because my display is at full brightness when plugged in and and half brightness when not plugged in. I usually never change it. When Lenovo comes out with the updated driver, I'll switch it back. -
installed it on mine (T61) through the standalone installer.
Ended up losing Vista Aero, can't run Windows Update anymore and can't get Windows Online help to work either.
Can't uninstall either. "Installed Updates" never finishes loading. -
I installed SP1 immediately after I got my T61 several weeks ago, with no problems. Things were slightly snappier than prior to the update. I used the standalone installer.
That said, I uninstalled Vista Business (32-bit) two weeks later, and went back to XP; it's just faster. Even the fingerprint reader scans quicker than on Vista, and there was nothing I could run/do on Vista that I couldn't do on XP Pro. -
What version of Vista did you have?
-
I have a copy of Ultimate Upgrade (retail) lying around, both 32 and 64-bit discs included, as well as Vista Premium (also retail). I haven't installed either of them on a system yet; I had Ultimate waiting in case I wanted to put it on my desktop (custom E6600 with 4GB and most of the toys that I put together), and Premium for my wife's system if necessary, or an HTPC if I choose to build one (right now I have a ReplayTV DVR doing that job).
I don't think it's that Vista isn't a viable OS; it is. But apps seem to start slower, and don't perform quite as well. Using XP, the same apps are snappier, and have more free resources to work with. File copies are faster (and unlike some, I occasionally do large network file copies at home or at work). The audio bug was the final straw, since when I'm at home I often stream MP3's off my desktop. It was glitchy; going back to XP got rid of this.
I hope the eventual SP2 will tweak Vista for speed. If it does, I'll look at it again. But that is what SP3 is purported to do for XP, and SP3 is in RC stage --its release may cause me to wait for Windows 7 if it's as good as the rumors say.
Hey --anyone want to buy a couple copies of Vista? -
Is it only people with X3100 that are having problems?
SP1 shows up in my Windows Update, but I'm too scared to install it. -
I wrote last night about how I'd managed to at least get WU to offer SP1.
It was all for nothing. The WU version didn't install and so today I downloaded the standalone installer. Still the same result: after the reboot it gets about 50% through "Configuring update 1 of 3" and then bombs. At least the installer manages to restore my system completely. The final message I get is 0x80070059.
I've already gone through all the Microsoft help sites and googled:
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2579217&SiteID=17
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366
The USB INF file solution suggested for code 0x80070059 doesn't make a difference. Now it looks like my options are:
1) Wait until I need to do a fresh install some day and then try the latest copy of Vista (followed by much tweaking to get the system how I like it.)
2) Dig out my copy of XP at some and install it instead (followed by much patching and updating.)
3) Give linux another try. I used it for 10 years but got sick of trying to keep it up to date and dealing with the lack of software and wanted something that "just worked." I guess Vista isn't the answer.
Either way, I've already spent way too much time working on this *&%##$ system. I can see why people buy Macs.
-
Installed through WU with Ultimate (x86) with no problems
-
Just a note to all the people who had problems installing SP1 and X3100 drivers from the exe file, you'll have to uninstall the old drivers first, restart the PC, then install the new drivers. It doesn't give any errors when that happens and will allow you to go through with the install. You shouldn't update to SP1 until after you install the drivers since it's probably less likely that you'll run into any conflicts and errors that way.
As many people have already commented, you do lose OSD control of the brightness, but that's what your eyes are for, right? -
I have installed SP1 several weeks before. I have no problem so far, neither i had with the installation.
It is indeed feel a bit faster and file-copy has really improved. It is now go to shutdown/hibernation/sleep a bit quicker and i think that Superfetch is further improved too.
All in all, i think that the "good" fixes are the ones that we do not see and surely sp1 makes a more stable OS. But is not some dramatic improvement that one would die for, only we have to do it because any update is for good... -
Wouldn't it have been nice if Lenovo had responded to this long awaited OS upgrade by rapidly providing validated drivers? I can see early adopters needing to go through the types of workarounds for adapting drivers that are available. However, once a large OS upgrade like SP1 has been released, you would hope that a company like Lenovo would have things ready for the average user.
The required drivers for X3100 graphics have been available for some time and I would have liked Lenovo to have made the necessary tweaks to them by now.
Perhaps they will get the drivers ready by April when Microsoft moves SP1 into autoupdate. I remain optimistic that Lenovo will do the right thing, but my faith is getting thinner. -
It's so strange, I had the conflict with the Biometric driver for the Fingerprint processor and have updated the driver. I have checked all the other conflictual drivers to see if I have any of them but I don't.
I'm still not seeing SP1 in WU though!!! -
Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrdddddddddddddd
It's just appeared. 65mb -
Is there anyway to email lenovo and let them know about the driver issues? I couldn't find anyway to email tech support and let them know.
-
i think we can wait for a while. let lenovo update all of their driver which having conflict with SP1 from vista. for sure they will know about this.
-
I downloaded the latest Thinkpad Productivity Center from Lenovo and it's screwed my T61P up, it's so much slower to use than the previous Access Connections.......... -
Hey guys, may I know whether any of you had installed sp1 after a fresh install of the os? is it necessary to install WU updates and drivers first before you can see sp1 through WU? Or is it OK to install sp1 through the standalone installer without installing any WU updates and/or drivers?
I remember sometime ago that there are two KB WU updates that needed to be installed first before sp1. Is it still true? -
-
Any of you had installed sp1 after a fresh install of the os. No
Is it necessary to install WU updates and drivers first before you can see sp1 through WU. I've read that SP1 will not show up in WU unless it is clear of all updates. I had no updates outstanding when I installed it
Or is it OK to install sp1 through the standalone installer without installing any WU updates and/or drivers? I would recommend against this, SP1 through WU seems to be tailored for your system (my update was 68mb compared to the standalone version of <>450mb ) -
The only difference between the standalone installer and the windows update version is that the windows update version only contains what you need and the standalone installer contains everything. By this I mean, when you download the installer it will be able to install in 5 different languages and for any version of vista. The WU on the other hand will only contain, for example, vista business in english. The end result of the two installations will be the same. The installer once opened will detect what your computers needs and it will install it in the proper langauge and version of vista. The 450 MB installer can be delete after installation.
However, If SP1 is not showing in your WU, then there is probably a reason for this. So, if you're worried about driver conflicts and such, then I would say just wait for it to pop up in WU. -
well, i downloaded the stand alone for x64. Did take advice and dl UPEK x64 driver. Stand alone SP1 installing now. Says will take serveral re-boots and about an hour. doobie doobie do
-
ok, took 4 reboots, about 40 minutes total, but installed. No issues as far as I can tell. The one thing I was hoping would get better is the HDD thrashing on rebooot that seems to last 10-15 minutes after each boot.
No errors I can tell. This was on X64 incidently. -
The standalone version page on the Microsoft website says in bold letters not to install it if you're installing it on a single machine. I have a mate that's done the standalone version and he's having huge problems with the speed of the machine, it's dropped considerably since he installed it.
I honestly think the best bet is to installed the one WU tailors for your machine. It's not rocket science to update the drivers if you have a driver conflict (as was mentioned earlier in this thread!!)
-
-
well. i decided not to take the risk (install using standalone) and did it through WU. Have to slowly decide which WU updates to install. It was a learning experience. At the end, it feels good!
I did:
1) Fresh install
2) Install latest drivers
3) Run WU (it'll show tons of updates)
4) Make sure you first install the three (or two, for non-Ultimate) critical updates KB 935509 (for Ultimate/Enterprise only), 938371 and 937287. If they don't appear, download from Download Centre.
5) Hide all other updates
6) Check for new updates
7) It'll show up 'new' updates (which are actually older ones because the latest ones are hidden)
8) Restore the updates that are similar to the 'new' updates (e.g. daylight saving) - these are essentials to be installed before SP1, apparently
9) Install those restored updates (make sure not to install the 'new' ones because they are older than those restored)
10) After these are installed, check again for new updates and viola! SP1 shows up!
And you know what to do from here...
