My wife has a T61 with Xp pro and has been working fine until a couple of days ago.

Now when the unit goes into stand by mode it will not wake. I have to press the power button and reboot.

    Can anybody help?

    Thanks,

Actually, it looks like it won't completely shut down. The little power symbol is still on.

If you hold down the power button for about 5 seconds, it should shut down the pc that way. Make sure it's not plugged in either or else the light will still be on.

Okay, I have that figured out.

But when I try to put the machine to standby, it won't completely go into standby mode.

    Try updating your BIOS version.

    From my Guide:

BIOS Version: If you decide to update your BIOS. It is highly recommended you create a BIOS Bootable CD and install it from that. DO THIS BEFORE THE CLEAN INSTALLATION. MAKE SURE YOUR LAPTOP IS CONNECTED TO AN AC ADAPTER AS WELL AS HAVE A 100% CHARGED BATTERY. REMOVE ANY USB DISKETTE DRIVE OR DOCKING STATION THAT IS ATTACHED BEFORE UPDATING THE BIOS.

Here is the link to the BIOS Bootable CD: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...&validate=true

    Create Bootable CD Instructions:
    1. Make sure you have a ThinkPad system with a CD-RW, CD-RW/DVD combo, or DVD multidrive installed and a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc.
    2. Start Windows Vista, XP, 2000 and logon with administrative privileges.
    3. Download the ISO file.
    4. For Windows Vista, click Start, then click Start Search. For Windows XP, 2000, click Start, then click Run...
    5. Specify the path where you downloaded the file, then click OK. RecordNow! or the default recording software will open. Example: C:\temp\7lujxxuc.iso
    6. Follow the instructions on the screen.

    Prepare the Boot Device:
    1. The resulting CD-R or CD-RW disc includes an operating system and is bootable on the supported ThinkPad models.
    2. Note: The System Program Service Utility bootable CD supports only the ThinkPad Ultrabay Optical Disc Drive in the ThinkPad Ultrabay. (Not in the Docking Station Ultra bay)
    3. Please confirm that an Optical Disc Drive is in the boot device list of your BIOS setup.
    4. Power off the ThinkPad, if it is turned on.
    5. Power on the ThinkPad.
    6. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the ThinkPad logo is seen on the screen.
    7. Select Startup from the menu.
    8. Select Boot from the menu.
    9. Under Boot Priority Order, set ATAPI CD0 to the top of the list, 1.
    10. Press F10 to save the new setup.
    11. Power off or restart the system.

    Updating the BIOS:
    1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the system.
    2. Place the System Program Service Utility (BIOS) CD into your ThinkPad Optical Disc Drive and turn on the system.
    3. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
    4. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
    5. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen.

    Attention:
Do not turn off or suspend the system until the update has been completed. If you turn off or suspend the system while the update is still in progress, the system board may have to be replaced.

After information panel appears, remove the CD-R or CD-RW disc in the drive then press Enter key to restart the system.

Do the following to make sure the BIOS is updated correctly.
    6. Turn off the system.
    7. Turn on the system.
    8. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
    9. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
    10. Verify the BIOS Version.
    11. Enter the BIOS Setup Utility if you need to restore your original boot order.
    12. Turn off the system.
