    Hi,

My T61 with XP SP3 stopped shutting down or restart. I'm using power button to power off the machine.

I tried finding the problem by trying various methods found online but unable to isolate the problem.
What is the correct procedure to identify and rectify the problem.

    Please help
    Regards

You're just pressing it briefly, letting the OS shut itself down properly, right? Does using the button in the start menu still work?

Control Panel -> Power Options -> Advanced Tab:
There's a pulldown at the bottom, asking you what to do when you press the power button. Also for when you close the lid and when you press the suspend button.

Open up msconfig and remove all the non-Microsoft services, and all the startup applications. You might want to write down what's checked so you can add it back later. You can also download and run ccleaner, see if that helps.
