I am considering purchasing a T61 for school but the model that's catching my eye is the XP Pro preloaded, since I live in Canada, customization is not a option.

Microsoft had a free XP to Vista upgrade program 1/2 a year ago. Do you think they're still running the program or am I out of luck? XP is probably better than Vista right now because of the software out there. But it'll be good to know whether the option of free upgrade is available or not.

Nope. That promotion was for people who bought a XP system from the month of October 2006 to when Vista came out. I'm pretty sure you have to shell out the $$$ if you want to upgrade now.
