I was curious about this when I saw someone say that Lenovo waived the restocking fee etc if it was sent back for additional paid upgrades. Is this also true if the giftee does the same, or only the one who orders it?

    (Fingers crossed)

What kind of upgrades are we talking about here? RAM and Hard Drive upgrades can usually be done cheaper by getting the stuff yourself.

No, I meant things like screen, GPU, OS, CPU, HDD, battery or camera upgrades.

I think it is a good ideal to spoil the suprise and ask the person that you are giving the gift to, to tell you what they want. The T61 already takes long to ship and if you have to return it later and get another one it will take a long time.

Unfortunately, that's not an option. I'd really like to know if I can do what I asked though. I won't open it until I find out. (Still haven't got it yet, though.)

If you want to return it to buy an upgraded T61 then calling Lenovo would be the way to go. I am sure they can waive the fee if you tell them you want to buy a more expensive laptop. But they dont have to do it.

That's a little vague though, which is why I'm asking here. I don't want to phone them until it is in hand, so I don't waste the opportunity in case it is something at the discretion of a rep. (Call now, especially with caller ID, and later they may pull up a previous "No")

I guess I'm asking if anyone has done this...

The answer was no, by the way. Only the person who ordered it can do anything.

Now you know for sure. :(
