T61 cpu temperature

hey bros opened up my laptop last week and gave the fans a good cleaning for the first time in two years. despite that it's clean and the palm rests stay cool almost all the time, rmclock and hwmonitor report cpu temperatures around 55-60+C. this is browsing with chrome with a couple tabs open, thinkpad power manager on, avast, and undervolting with rmclock. dont got anything else running currently.

should i be concerned about overheating at all? i'm in school now and can't afford the computer to die on me at any time. might be time to give into the temptation of getting a new w520 or x220?

edit: ive also noticed the fan has started rattling a bit

From my experience, the temperature could reach ~85 degrees when the application is CPU intensive. Surfing the web with Chrome doesn't necessarily mean that the CPU is working at its best, but the RAM is what you should consider about since multiple instances of tabs will make the computer slower.

 

Hmmm, 55-60c does seem to be a bit on the hot side for just browsing alone. I'm running FF with multiple tabs open, MSE antivirus in the background, iTunes playing and using Power Sourced Optimized settings on the Power Manager and my temps are around 36-46c on my T61. What processor do you have on the system and have you applied a fresh set of thermal paste when you cleaned out the fans?

 

do your t61 come with or w/o a nVida card?
Did you lift the heatsink up? If you did , then probably need a repaste. Otherwise, a repaste is also helpful.
My experience with t61 is the fan die quite easy ~~ If you heard some strange noise from the fan, just order 1 on ebay for ~10buck in case.

T61 is build quite tough and should last no problem. If you know how to open the thing up and watch temp, replacing fan or repasting probably is a trivial task for you .

 

55 to 60C is quite warm. Right now with Firefox, RMClock and HWMonitor running on my T61 (T7300, Intel integrated graphics) HWMonitor reports one core's max temp at 40C and the other at 41C. The fan isn't even running at these temps. I agree with the others, a repaste is in order.

 

Also which CPU do you have? 55-60C for a Merom CPU is a little high, my T7200 is about 42C in my Z61t (similar chassis style to T61). For a Penryn CPU, it is way too hot. You may want to consider a new heatsink. Alsow hat is your ambient room temperature?

Temputure is at 68C using TFPcontrol at 7
I just cleaned the fans and replaced the grease to Artic 5.

Should I be worried or change something?

I assume you have dual ida on, like me
1. idle @ max cpu settings
2. idle @ min cpu settings

These are mine with IE and Live mail open working on AC without battery and LCD 19" plugged in:

The strange thing is that the temps suddenly drops to 43C in IDLE while working on battery (AC and LCD 19" unplugged).

Power manager setting -> High energ saving is on in both cases.

What is going on?

 

Like I've previously posted before, the T9300 (Penyrn) hovers ~85 C at 2.49GHz when under heavy load.

However, the CPU does idle at ~46 C when the CPU isn't under as much work as the ~85 C.

UPDATE: RMClock states that my idle CPU is ~25 C and the heavily loaded CPU is ~64 C.

 

how did you get it to 2.95ghz?

 

Thanks jedisurfer, I didn't and I fixed that, 2.95Ghz was a typo, instead I meant 2.49GHz. That clock rate would be too hot for the system to handle anyway unless there was a more effective cooling method other than the stock heatsink.

rmclock at .95v on all speeds
rivatuner underclocked (I use the system for dev and testing so no need for graphics)
tpfancontrol at 7 all the time. I'm in the mid 40c, it gets to about 59c if I'm watching ESPN or other flash vids,

 

that is at idle with room temperature at 75 deg C and laptop lifted on 1" stands, open lid, with bunch of paper sheets sitting on the keyboard, using external monitor/keyboard/mouse, and laptop sitting at the corner of the room (so not much air circulation).

2D video is set at 100MHz GPU / 200MHz shaders / 100MHz memory
3D video is set at 600MHz GPU / 1200MHz shaders / 925MHz memory

- the GPU temp under TPFanControl is adjusted +3 deg to match various other temp monitoring programs;
- the CPU temp shown in ThrottleStop is incorrect due to the thermal sensing error when using Penryn chip in a Merom board, so the closest to real CPU temp would be the one shown in TPFanControl(CPU), but note that reading is not from the CPU itself but from a sensor that sits next to the CPU socket, so actual CPU core temps would probably be 1-3 deg off the reading.
