Why do you need drivers for the burner? If you need to read stuff with the drive, Windows already has the necessary drivers. If you need to watch DVD movies, you need a DVD codec. If you need to write stuff, you buy disc burning programs like Nero or Easy Media Creator. You don't need drivers.

Do these computers come with any dvd burning software. I did a clean install so I don't expect it to be on here, but I wanted to burn an avi onto dvd and I'm not sure how

To the right of the eject button there is a little black slider. Push it to the left and a little tab will pop out. pull firmly on the tab and the whole drive will come out. Firmly press the drive back in. Do you get a little icon that says "it is now safe to remove your hardware"?

ThinkPads come with Record Now though I don't know if it will work for what you are doing. All the software for your machine is located SWTools folder including the drivers and apps. I hope you burned off the recovery CDs first.

I tried burning my recovery dvd's when I first got my notebook. Thanks to intel turbo memory or thinkvantage access connections my computer froze while trying to make the dvd's. I then restarted and tried to burn them again and the rescue and recovery program told me I was only allowed to make one copy of the recovery disks.
However I did get the recovery disks mailed to me from lenovo. It'll probably be on the drivers and applications dvd. -
I'm running vista business, but I've been told microsoft will in many cases will let you add the dvd maker. Would that burning software make an AVI play on dvd players. I know programs like nero would but I don't want to pay $100 for their program. -

I have a T61 7658-CTO that came with Vista Business. It did not recognize the Mat****a UJ-852 dvd-ram drive or assign a drive letter. I purchased Vista Ultimate, but it would only do a destructive install because the dvd would boot the system, but the upgrade option was then no longer available. Upgrade has to be kicked off after the system boots. After copying the entire dvd into a sub-directory on my USB external drive, I was finally able to kick-off the upgrade from there. It took several hours, but now with Ultimate installed, the T61 recognizes the dvd-ram drive. I don't know if this is a Microsoft problem or a Lenovo problem, but needless to say, it was very frustrating. After all the hours spent searching and experimenting, I thought I'd post my experience here. Hope it helps save someone time. Of course, it does entail the purchase of an Ultimate license.
T61 dvd burner DRIVERS NEEDED
