My fan seems to run constantly whenever the laptop is connected to AC and most of the time the exhaust air is cool. Has anyone had the same experience or know what might be happening?

I have tried messing with various power mgmt and BIOS settings but nothing seems to change with the fan. Only when I am on battery does the fan behave normally, i.e., only turn on when things get warm.

Help! The constant whir of the fan is driving me insane.

If it's urgently pissing you off, setting the laptop to battery/power saver mode *should* do it.

If not, you could try speedfan, though I've heard there are some risks with it.

That said, if you can't change it through the bios, it might be locked like on my M50 (I overclock and use headphones, so wanted maximum cooling), and speedfan won't work...

Sorry I can't be of more help.

In ThinkVantage Power Manager, set the scheme to Maximum Battery Life. Otherwise, you can create a custom power scheme to lower fan speed. tpfancontrol is another program you can use to adjust fan speed (much better than Speed Fan for ThinkPads).

while tpfancontrol is a good program it makes the laptop run on the warm side. My t400's fan run constantly but heat is enemy number 1 of laptops so I would rather have the noise(not that much after all) than have my laptop running hot.

Monitor your temps with hwmonitor, maybe something screwy is going on with your sensors

Maybe there's a process making you CPU to go full load. Try monitor the temp with TPFanControl and further investigate the Power Savings plan on Power Manager. On my T61 I dont use the Lenovo software, only Windows power schemes along with RMClock undervolting my T8100 cooler.

Thanks y'all for the good insights and perspectives. The power savings plans are not having much effect, so I am going to investigate with tpfancontrol that y'all recommend.

    open windows task manager
    performance tab
    Resource monitor
    CPU
arrange by CPU/average cpu and list which "image" program is using the most cpu.

I've previously had a buggy lenovo service suck up almost 50% cpu constantly. Removing this solved my cpu load/heat issues.
