Hey guys,
So my t61 is awsome. Rarely freezes when i'm on power cord. But when I take cord out, the comp freezes within a cpl mins...
This is really annoying...please let me know if you have any solutions to this. Thanks.

Same here. It just stops working and everything freezes in place.

My T61 came out of the box with the same problem, running Vista Home Premium. Worked great on AC, but locked or froze in a short time when on battery power, especially using IE7. I was able to solve my problem using advice given here and on the other Thinkpad forum and now my T61 is solid.
For me, the problem seemed to be with the Turbo Memory that was installed. First I Installed the 1.1.0.1010 Turbo Memory drivers from the Intel site. A warning that they were installing an older version of TM driver than I already had appeared, but I ignored it since the 1010 was higher than the version I had updated from Lenovo.
Then, after rebooting from step 1, I installed the 7.6.0.1011 Matrix Storage drivers from the Intel site and rebooted. This last step took several attempts with failed installs, but eventually it worked.
After doing this I still had the freeze problem, contrary to what others had experienced. I then disabled both Ready Boost and Ready Drive components of Turbo Memory in the Turbo Memory Console and the problem disappeared. I ran in this mode for a week just to make sure and have had no problems.
I have since turned on Ready Drive, but not Ready Boost, and all continues to be well.
I'm hoping Vista SP1 will provide some relief from this problem. My solution may not apply to all, but it has provided a working system for me. -
I don't have turbo memory
.

try turning off APS...you shouldn't have any more freezes
-
Don't have any thinkvantage software either. Did a fresh install of Vista business. Thinking about going back to XP though.

Turns out my freezing was caused by disabling C4 mode to counter the awful c2d noise.
-
what is c4 mode?

I'm having the same problem on T61p (6459CTO) using Vista Business that I received end of Sept, 2007; My thinkpad consistently hangs after I unplug it or use it on battery for a little while, no matter what the performance mode is.
This seems brought on by drivers in my system since it did not occur when I first had the machine. So far, I have tried different video drivers and I have also disabled Active Protection Services (APS), but none of this has solved the problem yet.
The only hardware change I made was that I replaced the drive that came with the system with a Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 drive. Are there any drive settings we might be over-looking? hrmmm.
If you are having this problem, please post your thinkpad model + date received, since that might help us to find something consistent.
I do have the 1 Gb Intel Turbo Memory option, so I am going to investigate the ReadyBoost theory, and I'll call Lenovo in case that tidbit about the battery is true. -

Don't ya love that when ya get no feedback?

lol...yea i wish people would post on their success or failures to certain remedies more often to make NBR a more helpful place
i also want to track this particular fix -

Just got a T61p (6458-A17) and i'm hitting the same issue. The notebook freezes in a couple of minutes if running on battery. All works fine if the power cord is plugged in. I tried the solution mentioned below but I do not see any option saying "Hybrid Hard Disk Power" under power plan > advanced settings > hard disk. The only option there is "Turn Hard Disk After...". Any ideas what could it be? I tried turning off the APS but it doesn't seem to help.

if u dont have turbo memory...install the stand alone matrix driver
if you have turbo mem...just install the latest driver..which was released last month..and it automatically includes the matrix driver
after you install that...you will see that option available -
I have been experiencing the freeze while on battery with my T61 (turbomemory edition). I just disabled the hybrid setting in Vista power manager. I am very curious to see if it works. I'll report back after using wirelessly for a while. The hangups are very frustrating. Question, by disabling this hybrid setting while under battery, are we losing any positive benefits of the turbomemory?
-
it should work for you as it has worked for others..please keep us posted
Disabling the hybrid disc won't make u slose the benefits of turbo memory...but we are losing the benefits of a "better battery life" with turbo since we are disabling the power management of that -
Is there any solution for Windows XP?
I am using Lenovo T61 facing the same problems but i am running Windows XP. -

I downloaded the new Turbo Memory driver today. Has anyone else? Anybody tried using their T61 with all TM features going while on battery with the new driver update? I haven't yet but was wondering if people are seeing the stability issues go away with this new driver. I sure hope so. Post one way or the other.

it is still showing the latest driver for 32 and 64 bit vista from 11/07, where'd you get the new one from? -
My mistake. I guess I had not downloaded that one since it was released. Thinkvantage update just pulled it down today. I guess it (and I) am a little behind.
Sorry about that.

This is yet another very common complaint on this forum. A lot of the people who have experienced this said that it was a result of the TurboMemory. If you have that, you might want to disable it, if possible.
-
just disable hybrid power disc saving -
This was also happening to me. Can't tell you have frustrating this was and how incompetent Lenovo tech support has been. In any event, I just read the recommended fix and will let you know if it works. Also, had a few issues of hard drive freeze when in AC mode. Disabled Sidebar and that also seemed to fix the problem.

Started happening again, even when plugged in. Any suggestions? Hybrid has been disabled.
T61 freezes when i use it for even a little while on battery...
