If I get the integrated X3100 now with my T61, can it be upgraded to a discrete component down the road if needed?
    Thanks.

no integrated card can ever be upgraded...either way, lenovo doesn't let you upgrade your gpu at all.

The card is not going to be upgradable, but I believe there is a graphics card company that is working on external GPU for laptops.

Well, some can, if they have the right kind of interface, like "mini-pci-like" MXM or Axiom, or if the model in question has a video daughterboard by design. The T61 has neither. The only way to upgrade it is via a total system board swap out. (The CPU can be swapped though)

    Not worth it.

However, the ultrabase available for the T series has a pci-e slot for a desktop card which supposedly improves the graphics for the lcd, not just an external monitor. The problem with the Asus XG Station is that an external monitor is needed.
