I have my T61p for a year now and it work like a charm. But recently sometimes when I load a disc to the DVD drive it start making a loud spinning noise and will not quiet down until a use my head to push the DVD drive cover in. I thought maybe I didn't close the drive properly so I took the disc out and close it again same thing happen.

This doesn't happen all the time, though it seems to do it more often if it's a music CD.

i just fixed a sony laptop that had a similar problem. had a little dog hair in it. clean it out, eject it from drive and and put it back in.

also if you've played with the power plans, that can effect the noise vs performance setting

do the basics and clean drive, then eject and then check cd speed in power manager (under global settings->adv options)

Should I just do the basic surface cleaning, or should I take out the whole DVD drive from the laptop and clean it?

once a while, just take the drive, the keyboard and anything else that can be easily taken out, blow them with compressed air. I have a big sheepdog, so I have to do those things on all of my computers twice a year!
