My company is updating my notebook and I have the option of a new T61 or R400. Is there is enough of an advantage in the T series to forego the newer R400?
    Which one should I select?

    Thanks for your help!

Without a clue as to your needs, it's really hard to tell you much of anything.

Thanks for your response, the use of the notebook is primarily for business requirements. Typical use is having 10 plus apps opened at one time and running complex Excel spreadsheet.

The following is the tech specs of the notebooks:

    Product: IBM T61
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 1.80GHz
    Ram installed: 1 GB DDR2
    HDD: 80 GB
    NIC Card: 1 Gb Ethernet
    Wireless Card: Wirless B\G
    Display: Wide 14.1" TFT
    Video Resolution: 1280 x 800 x 32mb
graphics: Intel GMA X3100 GM965 Express
    closed height: 1.4"
    Weight: 5.23 lb

    Product: R400
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26ghz
Ram installed: 2 GB DDR 3
    HDD: 80 GB
    NIC Card: 1 Gb Ethernet
    Wireless Card: Wirless B\G
    Display: Wide 14.1" TFT
    Video Resolution: 1280 x 800 x 32mb
    graphics: Intel GMA X4500
    closed height: 1.2"
    Weight: 5.05 lb

(Also, I have to wait 2 months for the R400, I can get teh T61 now)

    Thanks for your advice!

I agree, go with the R400. I got mine about a month ago and I haven't had any problems with it except for the wrong wireless drivers were installed when I received it.

R400 seems to easily win on specs.

If both systems will be brand new, then it means its down to a matter of style. The T61 is apprently slightly thinner than the R400 and has a rubberized finish on the cover while the R400 is hard plastic, from what I am aware of. If then that slower processor of the T61 meets your mundane requirements, you can then opt for the style factor. Depending on what your preferences are you may choose either one that you find most appealing to you. In terms of hard specs theres only one winner (R400). Style is debatable on your preferences

theres also the self conscious issue to consider that is, is it 'new'. though both products are brand new, only the r400 is the latest and you'd hate to kick yourself in the future you dont have the later models and opted for a model that is on its way of being phased out (though not really, you'd tell yourself this though if youre on on the paranoid/anal side of things)

The R400 should have much better battery life than the T61.

    Another vote for the R400.

The T61 weighs more, has less ram, and lower clocked processor. Also, if using on your lap, the P-series processors run very cool.

Note: Based on my experience with a T61 and T400 [not an R400, but it's allmost the same, minus the magnesium cage if I'm not mistaken]

Thank you all for your input, I will be going with the R400.

Now I have to wait another couple of months before the R400s are ready to be deployed. Oh well, I guess it is worth the wait, I currently have a T42 and have waited so long, what's another couple of months...

We'll it's far beyond a matter of style with the processor's each machine has.
The t61p has a smaller processor and a smaller disk. Ordinarily I'd take the
T61p in second. it's a much better machine, but everything on it are so small.
