My T61's 3 years warranty expires this coming August, and it has an nvidia video card. I never had a single issue with it, the video card and cpu temperatures seem stable, and performance wise it does everything I need it to do.

Since it has a that defective nvidia video card, should I sell my T61 this summer and go for a new ThinkPad, or gamble and keep this one and hopefully it will stay solid?

Has there been many reports of dead T61's due to the nvidia defect? I can't find a lot of information on this

it is a gamble, i personally sold all my nvidia equipped t61,t61p and R61, because i really don't want to gamble.

You could sell it and get the T400, which is reliable and have hybrid gpu.

Yes. The T61p's workstation Quadro GPU is based on the faulty Nvidia GeForce 8600GT, and suffers from the same issue. I would try to sell it if possible - they sell quite well on eBay, actually.

I agree with this. The T400 is definitely a far more reliable system due to its ATI GPU. I'm not sure if you have a T61 or a T61p. If you have the 15.4" T61p, I would advise getting the T500 as its GPU is comparable in power. Also, the switchable graphics do wonders for battery life, and system temps on both the T400 and T500 are the coolest I've seen on a notebook.

Err, I think the only GPU issue was the T61p with the high-powered GPU. I don't believe the (fairly weaksauce) NV140m in the regular T61 had any issues. In any case, mine doesn't get above 70 degrees under full load. I wouldn't worry about it - use it until it breaks, and get a new one.

The Quadro NVS 140M is based on the GeForce 8400M, which is also affected by the same issue that plagued the 8600GT cards.

cool then, I get the message; In the summer, it's time for a new laptop. :D This time, I'll probably just go with an Intel since I don't use my laptop for graphic-intensive tasks.

I did look at eBay, and used T61's seem to go for around $300-400. I'll try to sell it on craigslist when I'll get whatever 14" T series is sold in th summer.

My GPU usually hovers around 59C at idle (right now). I never pushed it since I don't game. I think it's a tad high for idle temps although it's still in the safe range.

From what I've been hearing, the T510 runs very cool, since it has a very robust cooling system (3 heatpipes, I believe). And the particular problems that were common in the GeForce 8x00-based GPUs seem to have been resolved.
