I'm returning my t61 and probably not getting a thinkpad ever again.
I had to ship back my computer because the audio card doesn't work. They tested it and supposedly it works with the preinstalled image of windows vista they provide. If I went for that I would be stuck with a computer that doesn't really work well and cannot upgrade in any way. And also there's a stuck pixel. I'm extremely pissed off with their support. They won't repair the audio card because they consider that the fact that it works with their image is good enough.
Therefore I'm returning it I'm not sure what I'm going to get afterwards. Since I'm not in a hurry I might wait for a santa rosa/DX10 replacement of an Asus A8js.

If the audio card works with the factory pre-installed image, then the audio card works.

The factory pre-installed image works perfectly fine, although it does need some time to tweak its setting, uninstall a bunch of stuff. And it can be updated.

Have you ever considered the possibility that you did something with your own fresh install of Windows?

I hate to ask, but did you try installing drivers, either from Lenovo or the card manufacturer, for it?

Yes, I followed both clean install guides for windows XP and Vista several times. They didn't work. I also tried ubuntu linux with the same result.
And how come that it ONLY works with the factory installed image and nothing else for me when it does work for other people who have done their fresh installs?
Besides the factory installed image basically doesn't work, it freezes every 5 minutes. Can't work with that.

Apart from that it's a good way of getting rid of a computer that has the screen screwed up from week one.
