I am running vista, and just recently sound of any sort stopped working (even when using headphones). vista says my sound driver is up to date (using the soundMAX integrated). Any suggestions?

Remove the palmrest and see if the speakers connector is correctly plugged into the motherboard socket.
-
If it was that, would it also prevent headphones from working when plugged into the jack?
-
what playback device did you select for the sound in the control panel.

Speakers have a small check mark in its icon, and SPDIF interface says it is working right now. If I am looking at the wrong thing, could you please help guide me where I should look?
-
if you boot into the recovery console in your laptop during startup, you can do a hardware diagnostic.

Unfortunately that sounds way over my knowledge base
