So this week all of a sudden my T61 started making a buzzing noise clearly coming from the upper left of the machine. If I turn it off, let it rest and turn it on again it comes on again a minute after starting up. I can give more specs if needed but what do you guys suspect is wrong?

Perhaps you need to clean the fan and heatsink assembly. Are your vents visibly clogged?

I had this problem and I think a few other T61 owners have too, its the fan by the sounds of it, more than likely the bearings. I had to order another fan from Lenovo and replace it myself as was out of warranty, no issues for me as been building PC's for years.

I dont think its repairable, just a case of getting it replaced. Try cleaning it, but never worked for me.

I have been living with this problem for a while on my R61. It started about 2-3 months after the warranty was up. There not much that can be done about it except replacing heatsink/fan assembly. I have no problem replacing it on mine its just a matter of getting the part lol. seems like this is a common problem for alot of thinkpads. It seems like with as durable as the rest of the computer its they would put a longer lasting more durable cooling fan in.

I've had to replace both the CPU and GPU fans in my 3 year old Dell 9300. It would be nice if they laster longer, but these moving parts tend to be almost in the 'consumable' category.

I encountered similiar problem before. I sent it back to Lenovo to fix that problem. They replaced the fan for me.

careful when cleaning your fan, mine crashed into pieces when I clean the fan using a short burst of air from a screw compressor ...
