hello all, sorry for the poor english,
question about the T61 14.1 WXGA+ users, my screen is not so bad, but let's say that the lightning of the screen is not so uniform, on the sides, image is a little darker than in center of the screen, not so big difference, but when i compare with sony or asus lcd, this one seems not so uniform.
any experience around on similar issue ?

    thanks for your answers

well in compare to other brands, lenovo screen sucks big time of course, no question of glossy or not, but for a 2007 lcd , looks like we are back in the 90's when we all discovered flat panels......
angles are really poor of course, which i don't care much about, even if crisp the screen backlight is obviously not uniform, just have a look when you start notebook, light is not everywhere the same intensity

well it is not a dramatic situation exept if you consider sony or asus lcd quality as a minimum standard. you will not get that with lenovo T61 for sure.
I was at first disappointed and almost sure it was a defect. i then compared with other T61, they all th same at least for the 14.1 WXGA+ model, quality of lcd panel is poor, but keep in mind it is relative and each user will have a different feeling about that

What did you consider a defect about it? I have an ASUS screen circa 2 years ago and it isn't that great. It also has bad vertical and horizontal viewing angles. It's 180 nits which is 40 less than the 14 and 15 T61s.I can't speak for the newer ASUS screens though.

Sony also doesn't put glossy screens in anything but their business line I think which are equally horrid. And comparing a glossy screen to matte is a little unfair.

All TN notebook screens have limited vertical viewing angles. Blame the LCD manufacturers for this.

Mine seems ok, it could've been improved much so. I think the T61P that is coming out should get rid of this problem...That's if, you want to buy a new T series notebook.

how is the t61p gonna improve the screen quality?
    we don't really know anything
it's just assumed it'll be identical to the T61 but with better gfx card

I have a 5 year old vaio with a "12.1" TFT XGA Active Matrix Display" and I am completely satisfied with the screen. Do any of you think it's possible that the T61 screen can be a step backward from that? Basically, if I'm satisfied with my current screen, will I be satisfied with a T61 screen?

Answer: those who bought the optional Flexview screen which uses superior IPS lcd technology instead of TN lcd technology.
It's arguably the best quality laptop screen on the planet.

Yes not available to us peons but I think large custom corporate orders will be able to buy it on special-order in 15". It's all about paying enough $$$.

So eventually you may find one off-lease or on IBM certified used.

Furrycute, how is your adjustment to small text/fonts coming? I've never fully adjusted to my sxga+ for surfing, but it's only 14.1" instead of 15"

And they drop dead the IPS option because the market is changing into widescreen TV with bigger size. No one is making IPS so small for notebook. Well, some said Lenovo excuse is absolutely crap.
    http://www.lenovoblogs.com/insidethebox/?p=75

And now Lenovo can only provide us with middle quality TFT screen with various brightness combination.

I saw N100 at Best near my residence and the screen is ugly as hell. They have limited stock of T43 there and the screen is absolutely amazing. I am not sure whether its IPS or not though.

I can EASILY spot an IPS screen vs a TN screen on a laptop. The difference in quality is astounding. Also, just tilt the screen a little and you'd see.

If those T43's were hi-resolution and 15", then they had to be IPS flexview.

Thanks for the info. I think that must be IPS. I remember that the screen is 4:3 (not wide) and the windows bar and icons look smaller.
