A few days ago I ordered a t61 with 4GB of ram and Windows Vista Ultimate. I was not given a choice as to which version (32bit/64bit) I wanted.

    My questions are:

    1) Will they install the 64 bit since I ordered 4GB of ram?
    2) Will I be able to install the 64 bit version with the license for the 32 bit version?
    3) Will they ship me the Vista disks?

    Thanks.

    1) I am pretty positive you will receive the 32-bit OS installed on the computer.
    2) Yes, but you will need to get an Anytime Upgrade DVD for 64-bit, because...
    3) it seems lately they have not been including any discs.

The anytime upgrade disc can be bought for 5 bucks from CompUSA. I'd dig up the link for you, but there's an Anytime Upgrade thread around the Lenovo forum somewhere. Just do a search.

Please tell me you didn't really buy the laptop from Lenovo with 4GB of RAM  If you did you really should consider canceling unless you are just rich or got a deal that I am unaware. That is like a $500+ upgrade.

I paid $175 for 4GB of RAM that is every bit as good quality if not better than what comes from the factory. It is fairly easy to install. Click the link in my sig to see an installation video. Almost all RAM manufactures offer a lifetime warranty.

As far as Vista 64-bit. You can go from 32-bit to 64-bit by following the clean install guide. Link in my sig. Link to order "anytime upgrade" disks are there as well.

Yeah I got a deal. :p My friend's father works at IBM so I got a massive discount. xD I only paid around 1.6k for a system that would have costed around 2.1k+.

Thanks for the answers, I've already read stallen's Clean install guide, and it sounds simple enough; I'm just a little iffy about finding 64 bit drivers but it should be ok.

I think the 64-bit driver issue is exaggerated. Don't get me wrong. If you have some really old hardware or some specialized hardware you might run into a driver issue. Also, if you have some really old 16-bit applications those will most likely not run on 64-bit. You could even run into some 32-bit applications that have some 16-bit script still embedded that could cause problems.

The T61 has ALL of the necessary 64-bit drivers for the laptop itself. The best thing to do is to make a list of all the hardware and software you plan on using on the laptop and doing some homework to make sure they are all 64-bit compatible. Good Luck.

    2.1k US for that system?

I paid $1630 Canadian with taxes and shipping for the identical T61 with 1 GB ram 2 months ago. Straight off Lenovo Canada website. No discounts. Added 4 GB mem for $250. Cost me ~$1900 Canadian all together (~1750 USD)

Yeah, I was gonna leave it alone but this is what I paid for that system:

This system has Vista Ultimate and the T7500 processor. It also has turbo memory. It just didn't show up on the list. I got only got 1GB of RAM and the smallest hard drive because I plan on upgrading those myself.

I didn't say US, it was CAD, but my system, -the extra adapter and memory key, was already 2k. o_O

And I only paid 1673 cad for my system with 4gb ram.
