    Hi,

Are there are any massive reports of GPU failures on T61s with the nvidia quadro NVS 140Ms? It's built on the G86 core which was reported to be defective.

My fiance has a Dell Latitude D630 that has a NVS 135M and dell has rolled out a new BIOS update (to delay the eventual failure of the GPU). They have extended the warranty but no recalls. We're dissapointed.

I wonder whether Lenovo rolling out the new T400 and T500 with ATI GPUs have anything to do with the Nvidia fiasco and whether the current 'sale' of the T61s is an attempt by lenovo to clear the [defective] T61s quickly without any consideration of the end consumer who is going to be stuck with a defective notebook.

    Over 2 U.

I heard that this issue was fixed. I just got a new T61 last week, I'll let you know how it goes. It's got a 61% overclock, and running strong.

I definitely think the switch from nVidia to ATI by most brand companies is a result of the nVidia problem. The new Sony line, Lenovos and some other major players have ATI in them. Although they're weaker, they haven't had the problem (yet, who knows really). Even in Canada, I think the deals on the XPS M1330 and Lenovo T61s are trying to get rid of them for their respective new lines that carry ATI instead of nVidia. Maybe it's just coincidence, but I doubt it.

Maybe in a year the new nVidia 9xxx series will exhibit problems too, I mean, it took the 8xxx series that long to fail at higher than normal rates.

I haven't heard of any GPU problems so far. The fans are much better on Lenovo laptops so overheating normally isn't much of a problem.

The reason the new Lenovo line switched over to ATI is because nVidia doesn't offer hybrid/switchable graphics.

Not true. Sony did a hybrid graphics system with their SZ line. Their dedicated graphics solution was the Nvidia 8400M GS. It's just that Sony required you actually reboot in order to switch graphics, but it has been done with Nvidia before.

M3Coupe is partially right. Lenovo chose ATI because, as you said, the Nvidia switch required a reboot. ATI does not.

Weaker? The latest crop of ATI cards put Nvidia to shame—though this is only recently the case.

Not in the mobile market, at least not yet. I'm waiting for the T61p replacement with a more powerful graphics card with hybrid graphics.

I think we can safely assume that ATI will come out on top by looking at the mobile cards that have been released so far.

Guys, Thanks for all your comments! With what is happening to the Nvidia GPUs I'm waiting for the laptops to come with ATI GPUs. The T500 is one candidate but the T61s aren't clearing as fast and so the T500 aint coming down on price soon.

Just hope my T41 will hang in there for a couple of months.

CPU: Stock (undervolted from 1.25v to 1.125v)
    GPU: From 400/600 core/mem to 687/1002 core/mem = 70% overclock

CPU Temp: - 55c under stress
GPU Temp: - 55c - 65c under stress (depending on ambient and CPU temps)
GPU and CPU stress at the same time (using OCCT and ATITool): 70c max

    2770 3DMarks overall.

I'm happy with the results. :)
