Since there seem to be so many posts about problems I figured I would post up my sucess. I installed VISTA from an OEM DVD that I was able to obtain using the key from the underside of the laptop. vista home premium with out anything installed had 35 processes running. I then proceded to follow the guide found here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=126971&page=1 but I found that there were 2 or 3 areas where the drivers had actually been updated from the article so you may want to use it as a starting point. I did not install the system update and manually installed the hard drive protection system. otherwise i dont care about using the fn button and the only thing i lost was the ability to scroll using the middle button on the ultra nav. i dissabled the intel raid utility. i can still controll the lcd brightness but with out the hud. and there is a switch on the t61 to enable/dissable wireless so no need for fn key.
i have zone alarm and mcafee 8.5i installed other than the listed software and have 55 processing running
not one blue screen and office 2003 loads almost instantly it is fantastic....
using windows wireless.....
turbo cache works but reports lots of different sizes depending on where i was looking but intels driver/console reports it is 1 gb. i am not sure it actually does anything better for me but none the less bragging rights are there...

SUccess for me too!
Just got off the phone w/them and exemption on 15% restocking fee to send it back!
COngrats on your notebook green- I'm happy that you're happy with it. I'm sure the overwhelming majority of users ARE very satisfied. It's the few of us that hate it who are going to b1tch the loudest, of course. -
Glad it worked well for you. My clean install has been stable too. Out of curiosity, which video card driver did you install? The one off of lenovo's website, or the one from the nvidia site.
-
i have the integrated and installed from intel's site...
-
Ah, I lose points for reading comprehension

It's okay. Your name implies an excuse

My thinkpad was terrible out of the box. I originally had vista basic on it, threw an oem copy of ultimate on it. The laptop was an absolute nightmare running it. i spent a few hours getting all the drivers and trying to get the thinkvantage button to work properly.
Once I got it working to my liking, i realized that i didnt need all the features that ultimate offered so i reverted back to basic using the lenovo recovery dvd's(installing ultimate somehow screwed up the hidden partition and left me unable to recover directly from the HD). After I recovered from the DVD's, i immediately restarted the PC and hit the thinkvantage button and AGAIN re-recovered my computer, but this time from the harddrive.
The reason why I did this is because recovering from the HD allows you to choose what you want to and don't want to install.
I disabled all the crappy windows services that I didnt need, including their wifi finder(I like lenovo's much better)
My laptop runs like a champ right now. -
I was looking at the what processes use the most resources. There is something called dwm.exe which is the aero interface I believe. There is also something called taskeng.exe that I'm not sure about. Does anybody know anything about them? -
DWM is the Desktop Window Manager = Aero
taskeng is the Task Scheduler Engine -
so do I need taskeng? I don't use any task scheduler on my computer unless I'm using it for something I don't know about.
-
you need it - some Vista services use it...anyway - on my machine there are only 2 instances of it and combined they take up only 5Mb ram...hardly something to worry about!
T61 working great
