Here is a bit of a twister as far as a question goes.
I have a T61 which I won free out of scholarship.
I have not used it for the 1.5years I have had it, it just sat new in the box.
So two days ago my brother who also goes to RPI had a bad day, both of his dell's stopped working. One being 5yrs old and the other 7yrs old.
So he needed a machine, it was 4AM, so he came to my room and I handed him my T61.
His inspiron 2200 needs a new motherboard, and his inspiron 8200 needs a new power brick.
But he needs a new reliable system, and he likes the T61.
He wants to pay me based on how much its worth, which he said was $1000.
Here are the specs,
T61
15.4" 1680x1050
128mb Quadro NVS140
T7300 2.0Ghz dual core
4Gb Pc5400 memory
160gb 5400rpm Hitachi 5K250
9 cell battery,
1Gb ITM
Dual layer DVD burner
Intel 3945wireless
1.5yr warranty left
Please note the machine comes with about $10K worth of licensed software to the school.
I only put $60 into the machine to double the memory it had.
I dont know what to do, I would accept just $60 for it, if I were selling to my brother, but I dont know.
I feel weird if he was to pay me $1000 for a system I got for free
How much would this thing net today, so I can see if I am ripping my brother off or not.
I found a T61 with the X3100 gpu for $1100, but that seemed high to me

If it's in the immediate family it should definitely be free. Make him take you out for some expensive sushi as payment.....mmmmm sushi.
-
lol, I gave my sister my LG LT-20 Tablet PC a week after I got it because I decided that I wanted something with an in-built optical drive and she hasn't given me anything for it ..only an occasional, something is wrong with the computer, or I think I got a virus, or the computer suddenly turned off for no reason.. >_>
Well, this might be different, because my sister is in school and doesn't earn any dough. -
give it to him and let him be your slave for a day
-
I would give it for free. If you want to charge him then let him buy it off of you for $500 so at least you gave him an amazing deal sort of speak..

Without the software its probably worth ~700. But its really up to you what you want to charge him.
-
thanks guys
I think its between $60 just to cover the memory upgrade I put into it
or $500
I would feel wrong selling it to my brother for $1000
We are going to deal with the payments over spring break in like 2 weeks, which is why I asked,

Give it to him for $500. That's fair.. He's your brother so your giving him a very large discount which seems fair.
You shouldn't give it for free. If he asked you for $2000 you wouldn't give it unless it's under a special circumstance. -
This is one computer that you'll have for a short time vs your brother who will be there for your life. Give him the computer, and stop nitpicking the details.
-
I agree. What exactly is it worth to you to let it remain in your closet collecting dust? If you had plans to sell it any time soon (doesn't sound like you did), tell him you'll take a couple hundred bucks for it. That way he gets an incredible deal one could only get from family and you still get a couple hundred bucks for nothing.
Me, I'd probably just give it to him with my best Marlon Brando impression from The Godfather, "One day I will ask you to perform a service for me....."
-
While that's true, I doubt K-Tron has money to just throw away. It would be extremely nice, but it's not exactly a financially responsible decision.
In my opinion, giving him the laptop 50% off is pretty darn nice already. You saved him money and time. I'd ask for $500 and call it even. -
Well said.
-
Half price would be a sweet deal for your brother. $500.
-
if it was my brother or sister id give it to them for free under the condition that it finds its way back to me if he ever gets something better.
-
Excluding the software, I'd say its worth $750-850. $500 is definitely a fair price for your brother and is good for both of you. Considering the fact that he will need a new notebook anyway, instead of having to spent $1000+ he only needs to spent $500 for a decent system thats brand new. Whilst you also get the money. Win win situation!
-
Half price (e.g. $500) for immediate family seems fair.
But seriously, put that computer to work. ThinkPads weren't meant to sit in a closet collecting dust! -
X2. Well said !

well i just gave my brother my T42 with about $1500 of softwares for free...but your talking about a T61. ya i think $4~500 seems alright. then again...if it was my brother, ill just give it to him if he needs it.
just curious but what kind of scholarship is was it? As a almost rdy to graduate high schooler, im really intrested. my T60 is coming to its age soon so ill be seeking for new laptop...preferably a Lenovo. -
Just give your brother a good deal. If you need help from him in the future, he will be more willing to help you out. It is not worth it nitpicking over a few hundred dollars (unless your brother is a total flake and jerk).
-
I gave the system to him a few days ago. I wouldnt refuse to give it to him, that would be really mean.
Its his for $60, so everything is all even. I made the money back I paid to upgrade it, and were both happy
Now I just need to sell some of my other stuff to fund my detroit diesel project
