I have 2Gb memory, Turbo memory, Vista basic. Why hard drive bothers me so much.
I hope I can do a clean installation. But I don't have a vista disc... I even wanna go for linux now....

You can do a clean install using your windows anytime upgrade cd. use a program like magic jelly beans or tweakXP to get your CD key.

What brand is the harddrive thats in your system? you can find out by going to the device manager.

    ST910021AS. It should be 7200rpm 100G.
I really hope that clean install will help.

You can use the R&R partition. Sounds like a s/w issue. The drive only spins if an application or the OS is accessing it.

Turn off drive indexing. Turn off System Restore. That will shut your HD up.

I wouldn't chastise Vista regarding indexing though. It really does make Windows Search a lot easier to use. I suggest lettings index by itself for maybe half and hour and then go back to using it- the HD won't be constantly accessed anymore.

I defragged mine after initial setup and mass storage transfer and it is very quiet now. I have 7200rpm 100gb drive.

try using NHC. it can adjust hdd settings - set hdd to quiet mode... (of course your hdd must support this, but all new hdd's do)
