Since Lenovo claims that the T61 is the quietest Thinkpad ever, I have been attempted to buy one. But my current X60 is driving me crazy with all the fan noise and hard drive noise, I would like to know how quiet is the T61 really?

Anyone who has received the T61, could you report back your experience:

    1. how often does the fan turn on?
    2. how quiet is the hard drive?
    3. and how would you describe the noise when using it in a quiet room?

    Thanks in advance!

My T61 is really quiet, compared to my 2 years old LG LS70 it is much better. Even playing games, it stays cool & quiet.

    I have T7300 + NVidia NVS 140 card.

My T61 is okay - not too loud, but it could be quieter. One thing I noticed is that the heatsinks on the side are the color of aluminium - while all the pictures I see in the reviews look like they are copper. The heatsinks look thinner too... I think i've been the victim of a cost cutting measure.

I don't have one, but I was just using my friend's T60 and it seems to have the same noise problem I'm having with my 1520. There is a high-pitched whining sound when the laptop is unplugged and using battery. It is caused by the processor trying to save power. See this thread --> http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=143015&highlight=lul2x

Does anyone know if this is happening on the t61?

very quiet overall, but the fan does run most of the time. most quiet laptop ive had (had about 15 laptops in the past) 140m and t7500 in mine

now if we could ever get a fix for the dropping marbles in the 100gb 7200rpm seagate.

Mine is very quiet even with the 7200rpm drive. The fan does run all the time but you only know because you can feel it blowing air out the side.

The T61 should have a copper heatsink and the R61 should have an aluminum, at least according to these pics:

My T61 is not loud by any stretch but the fan does seem to run quite a bit.

If you are doing hard-drive intensive activity, it does get a bit warm under the right palm rest which is where the hard-drive is located. But I stress, a bit. I've been doing casual web surfing and typing for a couple hours now and it is not warm at all.
